Joe Root Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar to Claim Historic Fourth-Innings Test Record

By MyKhel Staff

England's batting maestro Joe Root has rewritten history, surpassing Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in the fourth innings of Test cricket. Root achieved this milestone during England's emphatic eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

Root's quickfire 23 not out in England's successful chase of 104 propelled his fourth-innings tally to 1,630 runs, edging past Tendulkar's 1,625 runs. Remarkably, Root accomplished this feat in just 49 innings, significantly fewer than Tendulkar's 60.

The elite list now places Root at the top, followed by Tendulkar, Alastair Cook, Graeme Smith, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Updated Leaderboard: Most Fourth-Innings Runs in Test Cricket

  1. Joe Root - 1,630 runs
  2. Sachin Tendulkar - 1,625 runs
  3. Alastair Cook - 1,611 runs
  4. Graeme Smith - 1,611 runs
  5. Shivnarine Chanderpaul - 1,580 runs

Root's milestone came during his landmark 150th Test, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest modern cricketers. Despite being dismissed for a duck in the first innings-a rare blemish shared with legends Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting in their respective 150th Tests - Root's resilience shone through.

His performance in pressure-packed fourth-inning situations highlights his unmatched consistency and adaptability. The match also saw other stellar contributions, including Brydon Carse's career-best 6 for 42 in the second innings, completing a ten-wicket match haul.

On the batting front, debutant Jacob Bethell impressed with a composed 50 not out, guiding England to victory alongside Root. As England takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, they enter the second Test with confidence, buoyed by Root's record-breaking feat and the team's all-round performance.

Meanwhile, New Zealand faces the daunting task of regrouping after a tough loss, with captain Tim Southee hoping to rally his side for a better showing. Root's achievement solidifies his place among cricket's all-time greats surpassing Sachin Tendulkar.
