Jonny Bairstow Controversy: Did Australia break Spirit of Cricket in Ashes 2023?

Cricket is a sport often known as the Gentleman's game. The game of cricket is admired for the respect between the opponents and adherence to the laws of the game on the majority of occasions.

But amid the ongoing Ashes 'Spirit of Cricket' issues, it may well be the appropriate decision to have a look at the laws and the preamble of the game, which clearly depicts how the spirit of cricket must be maintained.

Australia

The Ashes 2023 has spurred controversy, which was initiated during the final day of the 2nd Test. England batter Jonny Bairstow was out stumped on the final day of the Lord's Test after he left his crease as an over completed.

Since then, the English experts and fans have dipped the Aussies with criticism, citing their lack of respect for the spirit of the game. Australians, on the other hand, have hold on to the basic rules of the game and are claiming they have done nothing wrong.

Even the Australia PM and UK PM have shared their reaction to the incident, further instigating the hot atmosphere in the summer of England. But, what does the cricket rule book say about the spirit of the game?

The Preamble of the Laws depicts the Spirit of Cricket. And if we check the topics associated with the spirit and sporting mentality of the game, we will find some startling yet vivid instructions.

The Spirit of Cricket is supposed to be the main responsibility of the captains, whereas the other players are also part of it. Also the spirit of cricket is supposed to be an innate learning of all the match officials, junior cricketers, teachers and parents of the cricketers.

What is the Spirit of Cricket?

Respect your captain, teammates, opponents and the authority of the umpires.

Play hard and play fair. Accept the umpire's decision.

Create a positive environment by your own conduct, an encourage others to do likewise.

Show self-discipline, even when things go against you.

Congratulate the opposition on their successes, and enjoy those of your own team.

Thank the opposition and officials at the end of the match, whatever the result.

These are the basic components of Spirit of Cricket.

Did Australia break the Spirit of Cricket?

England players, experts and Prime Minister may raise questions on Australia and their spirit of cricket issue, but from the Jonny Bairstow incident and the cricket rule book, it can concur that the Aussies didn't break any rules, which may hurt the Spirit of Cricket.

It was a completely fair call from Pat Cummins and his team to ask the umpire, and in the end, the umpire took the decision of giving Bairstow Out. Yes, it was an unfortunate incident for the English batter, but he himself is to blame for that.
