Jos Buttler reaches 200 ODIs: How England's white-ball great stacks up against Eoin Morgan
Jos Buttler became just the second England men's cricketer to reach 200 One-Day International appearances during the first ODI against India at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
The wicketkeeper-batter joined former captain Eoin Morgan in an exclusive club after making his ODI debut against Pakistan in 2012. Over the past 14 years, Buttler has established himself as one of the most destructive white-ball batters of his generation and played a central role in England's transformation into a global ODI powerhouse.

While Morgan remains England's most influential ODI captain, Buttler has built a legacy of his own as one of the format's most explosive finishers.

Different roles, same legacy
Although both defined England's modern white-ball era, they did so in very different ways.
Morgan was the architect of England's ODI revolution following the 2015 World Cup, transforming the team's fearless batting approach before leading them to their maiden 50-over World Cup title in 2019. He remains England's leading ODI captain and one of their greatest middle-order batters.
Buttler became the face of that aggressive philosophy on the field. His ability to score at extraordinary pace redefined the finisher's role in ODI cricket, with no England batter matching his combination of power-hitting and consistency.
Among his standout records are:
- England's fastest ODI century (46 balls)
- Three ODI centuries in 50 balls or fewer (most by an England batter)
- Second-highest strike rate among players with 5,000-plus ODI runs
- Most ODI centuries for England while batting at No. 5 or lower
Their partnership defined England's golden era
Morgan and Buttler were teammates throughout England's rise to the top of ODI cricket.
One of their finest stands came against West Indies in Grenada in 2019, when they added 204 runs for the fourth wicket. Buttler smashed 150 from 77 deliveries while Morgan scored 103 as England posted one of the highest totals in ODI history.
Morgan later identified Buttler as his natural successor, with the wicketkeeper taking over England's white-ball captaincy following Morgan's retirement and leading the side to the 2022 T20 World Cup title.
England players with the most ODI appearances
| Rank | Player | ODIs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eoin Morgan | 225 |
| 2 | Jos Buttler | 200 |
| 3 | Paul Collingwood | 197 |
| 4 | Andrew Strauss | 177 |
| 5 | Ian Bell | 161 |
*Note: Morgan's tally refers to matches played for England. He also represented Ireland in ODIs.*
Who could join the 200 ODI club next?
Joe Root is the overwhelming favourite to become England's third player to reach the milestone.
| Player | Current ODI Caps | Matches Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Root | 189 | 11 |
| Adil Rashid | 161 | 39 |
| Ben Stokes | 114 | 86* |
| Harry Brook | 70+ | Long-term prospect |
| Jacob Bethell | Early career | Long-term prospect |
Root, England's leading ODI century-maker and current all-time leading run-scorer in the format, is expected to become only the third England men's player to reach 200 ODI appearances if he remains fit over the next year. Adil Rashid is next on the active list, though the veteran leg-spinner still requires 39 more matches to achieve the landmark.
