Jos Buttler will continue to lead England in the white-ball format, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Tuesday (July 30). The announcement came as Marcus Trescothick was appointed the interim head coach of the ODI and T20I formats after the resignation of Matthew Pott.
Jos Buttler led England to the T20 World Cup title triumph in 2022, but the Three Lions also gave up two World Cups under his captaincy in the last 12 months. England were beaten by eventual champions India in the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2024, but finished at the seventh spot in ten-team ODI World Cup 2024.

The defending champions could manage to win only three matches and at one stage stood the chance of not qualifying for the Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, the top eight teams in the World Cup 2023 were to qualify for the Champions Trophy alongside hosts Pakistan.
While making the announcement of Trescothick's appointment, England's director of cricket Rob Key said the former opener shares a good relation with captain Jos Buttler.
“Marcus Trescothick is well respected in the dressing room and will take charge of team affairs alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler. Marcus and Jos have a good rapport, and I think their partnership will help us maintain continuity and stability," Rob Key said.
Marcus Trescothick also said that he was looking forward to working with Buttler. He also mentioned that their focus would be on he plans for upcoming white-ball series against Australia in September, and the Champions Trophy early next year.
“I am looking forward to working with Jos Buttler, the players and coaches over the next few weeks. The focus is building towards the series against Australia and our plans for next year’s Champions Trophy campaign," Trescothick said.
“England cricket is in a strong position, and the potential is huge, given the quality we have available. It is about harnessing that potential and developing the work that has already been put in place by Mathew Mott and the rest of the set-up. I’m excited about the challenge and shaping how we want to play," he added.
