Josh Baker: Worcestershire youngster Passes Away at 20, Found Dead at Home after not attending County Match

Josh Baker, a young English spinner, passed away tragically at the age of 20 on Thursday (May 2).

Baker, who represents Worcestershire in English county cricket, was found dead at home by a friend after he failed to appear in an ongoing county match.

His absence was first noted when he failed to appear for a match against Somerset, leading a friend to discover him in his apartment. Baker, a promising talent in cricket, had made significant strides in his career, including his first-class debut for Worcestershire in July 2021 and representing England at the Under-19 level twice. The youngster also claimed three wickets while playing the match against Somerset on Wednesday.

Following the announcement of his untimely death, Worcestershire County Cricket Club released a heartfelt statement, highlighting Baker's vibrant spirit and professional dedication.

Known for his remarkable spin bowling and infectious enthusiasm, Baker was described as a true credit to his family and a deeply valued member of the team. The club has pledged to support Baker's family, friends, and colleagues in this difficult time and to honour his memory in a fitting manner.

The match between Worcestershire and Somerset was ultimately declared a draw as both teams and the cricket community began to process this profound loss.

Ashley Giles, former England spinner and now CEO of Worcestershire, expressed his devastation over Baker's passing, emphasizing Josh's integral role in the cricket family and the void his absence leaves behind.

"The news of Josh's passing has left us all devastated. Josh was much more than a teammate, he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh's family and friends," Giles said.
