Josh Hazlewood Injury Update: Aussie Pacer Targets Gabba Comeback After Rigorous Fitness Test

By MyKhel Staff

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has provided an encouraging update on his recovery from a side strain, expressing optimism about playing in the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India at The Gabba, starting December 14.

Hazlewood's absence in the ongoing Day-Night Test in Adelaide was a precautionary move to prevent aggravating a recurring injury. Speaking during the second day's tea break, Hazlewood shared details about his progress.

"The body is feeling pretty good. It has been a long gap between Tests, which gave me extra days to recover. I've ticked off a few boxes this week, but there's a big one left on day four-bowling a few spells and seeing how I pull up. Fingers crossed," he said.

Hazlewood has been undergoing rigorous fitness sessions at the Adelaide Oval to simulate match conditions. His practice included high-intensity bowling spells to test his readiness for a five-day game.

"It's the 24 hours after these sessions that matter the most. Cooling down fully and going again the next day will indicate if I'm match-fit for Brisbane," he added. Hazlewood's injury stems from structural and muscular issues near his rib cage, a recurring problem over recent years.

He acknowledged the frustration but highlighted his experience in managing such setbacks. "It's not a typical side strain, but I know the feelings and signs now. That makes decisions easier," he explained. In his absence, Scott Boland has stepped up for Australia in the Adelaide Test.

Boland claimed 5/105 in the match and helped secure a massive 10-wicket win to level the series 1-1. The selectors now face a tough call for the Gabba Test: whether to persist with Boland or bring Hazlewood back into the XI.

Reflecting on the venue, Hazlewood expressed confidence in Australia's chances with the return to red-ball cricket at Brisbane. "The pink ball tends to soften quickly on the hard Gabba pitch, but the red ball suits us better. It's a place we enjoy playing," he said.

Hazlewood's final availability for the Gabba Test hinges on how his body responds in the coming days. If cleared, his return will boost Australia's pace attack as they look to regain dominance at a venue that has delivered mixed results in recent years.
