West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves etched his name into the Test record books with a spell unlike any seen before, becoming the first bowler in recorded Test history to deliver five consecutive wicket-maidens during the opening Test against Pakistan in Trinidad.

Greaves tore through Pakistan's middle and lower order with a sensational spell of 5/27, helping West Indies dismiss the visitors for 282 and secure a crucial 29-run first-innings lead at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.\

The right-arm seamer produced one of the most remarkable spells in recent Test history, claiming all five of his wickets in successive overs without conceding a single run.

His sequence of five consecutive wicket-maidens is the first of its kind in available Test records and eclipses the previous benchmark of four successive wicket-maidens set by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2016.

Greaves' figures of 5/27 from 11 overs also marked the first five-wicket haul of his Test career.

Pakistan collapse after strong start

Pakistan looked well placed to take control of the match after reaching 244/3, with captain Shan Masood bringing up a century.

However, Greaves sparked a dramatic collapse by dismissing Masood before ripping through the middle order.

Aamer Jamal, Mohammad Rizwan, Ali Usman and Mohammad Abbas all fell during his extraordinary spell as Pakistan lost momentum completely.

The visitors were eventually bowled out for 282, falling 29 runs short of West Indies' first-innings total of 311.

Justin Greaves credits captain Roston Chase

After the day's play, Greaves revealed West Indies captain Roston Chase kept his instructions simple when handing him the ball.

"When I came on, captain Roston Chase just said, 'Continue to be disciplined in what you are doing' and to see if I can get some wickets for the team," Greaves said.

"The ball nipped around, and I got some reward. Anytime I get the ball in hand, the team looks to me to be that solid player for them to try to dig us out of situations."

"To get five wickets for the first time in Test cricket, I'm really happy, but there's still a lot of work to do in the game."

Pakistan fight back late on Day 3

Despite Greaves' historic performance, Pakistan responded strongly with the ball in West Indies' second innings.

The hosts slipped to 126/7 by stumps on Day 3, with Shamar Joseph unbeaten on 22 and veteran Kemar Roach on five.

West Indies ended the day leading by 155 runs with three wickets remaining, keeping the first Test finely poised heading into the fourth day.

While the contest remains in the balance, Greaves' remarkable burst ensured Day 3 belonged to him, as the all-rounder became the first bowler in recorded Test history to claim five wickets in five consecutive maiden overs.
