Kane Williamson Declines NZC Central Contract: Will The Star Batter No Longer Play For New Zealand?

New Zealand star batter Kane Williamson on Wednesday (June 19) declined the central contract for the 2024-25 year and also stepped down as captain from the white-ball teams.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) released a statement to confirm that the veteran batter opted out of the central contract for the 2024-25 season to pursue overseas league opportunities.

Speculations were building around Williamson's future after New Zealand suffered a heartbreak following an early exit in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The star batter didn't give away much about his T20I future after the victory over Papua New Guinea.

"Oh, I don't know. There's a bit of time between now and then, so it's about regrouping as a side. We've got red-ball cricket over the next year basically, so it's back into some other international formats, and we'll see where things land," Williamson said when questioned about his future.

This may have been his final T20 World Cup appearance. But what about the immediate future of the veteran batter? Will he play for the national team in other formats? Here is what the player himself said:

Will Kane Williamson no longer play for New Zealand after declining central contract?

Williamson has declined a central contract for the 2024-25 season. But the veteran batter emphasised his long-term commitment to the Blackcaps, meaning he will be available for selection in all three formats.

It's only that he won't be available for national selection in the January window, which mainly features Super Smash, a domestic T20 tournament in the New Zealand calendar. So, the star batter will be available for the national team after January.

Unlike Trent Boult, who last featured in a Test match in 2022 after opting out of New Zealand central contract, Williamson will be part of the Test setup. Williamson will remain available for the eight World Test Championship matches.

As it stands, New Zealand's next assignment is a three-match series against England on home soil in November-December this year. He will also remain in plans for the build up to the Champions Trophy 2025.

Williamson, who remains committed to New Zealand, is pleased to find a way to balance his personal and professional life as he continues to strive to play for his nation.

"Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished. My life outside cricket has changed however - spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that's even more important to me," Williamson said in a statement released by NZC.
