GT vs CSK, IPL 2023: Kane Williamson suffers awful injury after superb fielding effort at boundary

By Aditya K Halder

Kane Williamson suffered an awful knee injury following a superb yet failed fielding effort during GT vs CSK match at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. Williamson received immediate treatment on the boundary lines following the mishap and was taken off the field by the Gujarat Titans medical staff.

The incident happened in the 13th over of the first innings of the match after Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya sent Chennai Super Kings to bat first. Fielding at the midwicket boundary, Williamson made a stunning fielding effort in the air to stop a certain boundary coming off the bat of Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, the New Zealand batter landed awkwardly and hurt his right knee.

Kane Williamson was then spotted lying on the ground and wrenching in pain as he held his hurt knee. The fielding effort was also wasted as the ball also touched the boundary line. Williamson was soon attended to by the team physio and after a few minutes of treatment, he was taken off the field with support from other staff of the franchise.

The Gujarat Titans star didn't return to the field for the remainder of the innings of CSK, who posted 178/7 in 20 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad starred for the visitors as he scored 50-ball 92 while smashing the first half-century of IPL 2023.

The opener smashed nine sixes and four boundaries during the course of his innings. For Gujurat Titans, Alzarri Joseph, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Shami took two wickets each. Shami also took his 100th IPL wicket as well.

Meanwhile, there's no update on whether Williamson will bat in the second innings.
