New Zealand dealt blow on the the aftermath of an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 as star batter Kane Williamson has rejected a central contract for the 2024/25 season and also relinquished the white-ball captaincy.
Williamson-led New Zealand lost in stunning fashion to Afghanistan in their campaign opener and also suffered a loss to West Indies, but secured wins against Papua New Guinea and Uganda. However, that was not enough for the Blackcaps to progress from a tough Group C.

On Wednesday (June 19), New Zealand Cricket suffered a fresh blow as they confirmed the skipper had declined a central contract to pursue other opportunities during the January window.
The New Zealand players with a central contract need to be available for all home games and the Super Smash, which is held in December-January, when leagues such as SA20, Big Bash League and ILT20 take place in the calendar.
Williamson has admitted he wants to participate in overseas franchise leagues during January, but the star batter has made himself available for national selection outside that month and is open to the possibility of accepting a central contract offer in the future.
"Helping push the team forward across the formats is something I'm very passionate about and something I want to keep contributing towards," Williamson said in a statement.
"However, pursuing an overseas opportunity during the New Zealand summer means I'm unable to accept a central contract offer. Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished.
"My life outside cricket has changed however - spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that's even more important to me."
Apart from Williamson, NZC also confirmed that fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has also indicated he wouldn't accept a central contract offer. This all comes after Trent Boult was granted a release from his national contact 2 years ago to make himself available for overseas T20 leagues.
NZC chief executive Scott Weenink has said the board gives preference to players with a contract, but has made an exception for a "committed" Williamson.
"NZC has a strong preference to select centrally contracted players for the Black Caps, however we're happy to make an exception for our greatest ever batter - especially as he remains so committed to the team. I know it sounds a bit counterintuitive, but I'm very encouraged by this development."
