Kapil Dev, 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain, has claimed he was not invited to the ICC World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia on Sunday (November 19) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Reports suggested that BCCI had invited World Cup-winning captains to attend the closing of the show-piece tournament. The 2011 World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also expected to be among the guest, but he also did not attend the event.

Kapil, who led India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1983, said he wanted to travel for the game in Ahmedabad with the rest of his World Cup-winning teammates. But the legend reveals, he wasn't invited.
"I wasn't invited there. They didn't call me so I did not go. As simple as that. I wanted the whole '83 team to be there with me but I guess due to the fact that it's such a big event and people are so busy handling responsibilities, sometimes they forget," Kapil told ABP News.
Among other former India captains who were present at the Narendra Modi Stadium were Sourav Ganguly, who was invited in the capacity of a former BCCI president. Inviting past presidents and officials is a BCCI norm.
Legendary Sachin Tendulkar was present as the ICC Global Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2023. The other celebrities who were in attendance for the high profile game were actors Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
Badminton great Prakash Padukone was also seen sitting in the stands. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle was also in attendance alongside several cricketers wives.
Sadhguru also was spotted seated next to BCCI secretary Jay Shah during the final in which Australia defeated India by 6 wickets. Opting to bowl, Australia restricted India to 240 All Out, and completed the chase riding on Travis Head hundred and Marnus Labuschagne fifty.
