Karun Nair scores magnificent Century for India A - Should he play the 1st Test in India vs England Series?

By MyKhel Staff

Karun Nair has made a compelling return to form by scoring a century for India A against the England Lions on Friday (May 30).

After making a return to the India A side, Nair has given himself all the reasons for further opportunities with a gritty century in testing conditions.

Karun Nair

Nair's journey back to prominence has been marked by consistent performances in domestic cricket. Notably, he scored a century in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final between Vidarbha and Kerala, contributing to his tally of nine hundreds across formats in the 2024-25 season, including four in the Ranji Trophy and five in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

After India A was put into bat, they lost captain Abhimanyu Easwaran and then Yashasvi Jaiswal early. But after that, Karun Nair and Sarfaraz Khan took control and stitched a magnificent partnership. The duo added 181 runs for 3rd wicket. Although Sarfaraz got out for 92 runs, Nair brought up his century in style. He has capitalized that as the Delhi Capitals batter bats on 160 runs, with India A currently 360 for 3 in the flag end of first day's play.

His recent century against the England Lions further solidifies his case for inclusion in the national team. This innings not only showcases his technical proficiency but also his mental fortitude-qualities essential for success at the highest level.

Should Karun Nair Be Selected for the First Test Against England?

The question of Nair's inclusion in the upcoming Test series against England is both timely and pertinent. Given his recent performances, there is a strong argument for his selection.

However, it's important to consider the broader context. The Indian selection committee has faced criticism for overlooking Karun Nair. In Nair's case, his recent form suggests he could be a valuable asset to the team.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not available, the 33-year-old can be the perfect solution for India. It is to be seen if Nair is handed an opportunity in the top order, or if he would be slotted in the middle order, where India needs backup for the upcoming England Test series, which starts from June 20.
