KCA Announces Five-Year Master Plan to Transform Kerala Cricket League into India’s Leading Domestic T20 Competition

By MyKhel Staff

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has announced a comprehensive five-year master plan to elevate the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) into the leading domestic T20 league in India, aiming to surpass the Tamil Nadu Premier League in both popularity and reach.

In a release from the KCA, the plan includes a series of initiatives focusing on improving the quality of cricket, expanding audience engagement, and enhancing the league’s visibility through robust broadcast strategies.

KCA Announces Five-Year Master Plan to Transform Kerala Cricket League into India s Leading Domestic T20 Competition

KCA set for multifaceted KCL Approach

  • Enhanced Broadcasting: All matches of KCL Season 2 will be broadcast live on Asianet Plus, Star Sports, and the OTT platform FanCode, a significant expansion from the first season, where only the opening and final matches were televised. The first season saw 3.4 million unique viewers on Asianet Plus alone, with total viewership reaching about 14 million when including Star Sports and over 2 million on FanCode. Nearly half of the viewers were from outside Kerala, underlining the league's growing national appeal.
  • Star Power: Indian cricketer Sanju Samson returns for Season 2, having been the highest-paid player at the recent auction (₹26.80 lakh), and is expected to be a major draw for fans and sponsors, significantly boosting the league’s brand value.
  • Fan Engagement: KCA plans to establish fan parks in every district and outside Kerala, introduce entertainment events during matches, and offer special cricket tourism packages for fans from other states. A new fan engagement app and animated mascot-based content are also being launched to enhance digital interaction.
  • Celebrity Involvement: The league will invite celebrities, national-level cricketers, and IPL franchise officials as special guests, and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has been appointed as the brand ambassador, further increasing the league’s glamour and media attention.
  • Women’s Cricket: KCA is committed to launching a Women’s KCL within one or two seasons. A special logo for the women’s league will be released this season, and women officials are expected to play a prominent role. In the previous season, three women worked as umpires, marking an important step towards gender equality in Kerala cricket.
  • Economic and Social Impact: The league has already contributed significantly to Kerala’s economy, generating ₹30 crore in its first season and creating over 700 direct and 2,500 indirect jobs, with 40% of support staff being women. Partnerships with local organizations, such as Kudumbashree units running food courts, further integrate the league with the community.
  • Player Development: KCA intends to increase the number of teams, raise the team auction cap (currently ₹50 lakh per franchise), and improve player remuneration. Revenue from the league will be reinvested in scouting and nurturing cricket talent, with plans to conduct district-level leagues to identify emerging players.

Following Season 2, KCA will conduct a detailed review to finalize the implementation roadmap for these initiatives. The association believes these steps will position KCL as the most powerful and popular domestic cricket league in India within five years.
