KCA nets Rs 1 cr from 2nd ODI in spite of near washout

By Staff

Kochi, Oct 3 (UNI) The second Future Cup series ODI match between Australia and India played here yesterday, surviving the threat of being washed out by prolonged monsoon rains, has brought in Rs one crore from the sale of tickets, to Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) coffers.

According to KCA Secretary T C Mathew, the Association was actually expecting Rs 1.5 crore from the game. ''Some chair tickets and seats in the gallery remained unsold'', he told UNI when contacted.

''This was because the rains raised a fear of the match being washed out, preventing cricket lovers from Malabar and other places from coming down for the match'', he also pointed out.

Asked which of the ODIs played here so far had yielded the maximum revenue for the Association, he said the 2006 match against England raked in a higher amount compared to yesterday's game.

''But the maximum collection so far has been Rs 2.12 crore for the match against Pakistan in 2005 March'', he revealed.

Kochi, which first went into the Cricket Board's list of ODI venues in 1998 with the India-Australia match, went on to host four more and the sixth match yesterday at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, which has a capacity of 50,000.

Besides having found a sponsor for the Kerala Ranji trophy team, the KCA is also coming up with a definite plan to develop cricket in the state, with a special focus on rural areas, following the emergence of young pace bowler S Sreeshant. The KCA will also be having its own cricket stadium here.
