KCL 2026: Kollam Sailors win a thriller as Kochi Blue Tigers suffer fifth defeat in a row

Aries Kollam Sailors held their nerve in a thrilling Kerala Cricket League encounter to beat defending champions Kochi Blue Tigers by three runs, handing the reigning champions their fifth consecutive defeat in KCL 2026.

Kollam posted 158/9 after being put into a position to set the target, and Kochi appeared to have the chase under control at one stage before a decisive spell from Pavan Raj turned the contest in the Sailors' favour. Kochi finished on 155/7 after 20 overs.

Kollam's innings began in emphatic fashion as captain Vatsal Govind and Abhishek J Nair put the Kochi attack under pressure from the outset. Vatsal repeatedly found the boundary against Sally Samson, while Abhishek struck three consecutive fours off Alfie Francis.

The Sailors raced to 50 in five overs and crossed 100 in the 11th over, putting themselves on course for a sizeable total.

The momentum shifted after Abhishek was dismissed for 46 with the score on 99, caught by Karthik B Nair off P S Jerin. Kollam's middle order struggled to build on the platform, with Ajinas and Anand Krishnan failing to score runs.

Vatsal remained the key figure for Kollam, scoring a well-made 77, but he was eventually run out as the Sailors finished on 158/9. P S Jerin, Karthik B Nair, Basil Thampi and Muhammad Ashiq took two wickets each for Kochi.

Kochi's chase began poorly as they slipped to 48/3, losing Vinoop Manoharan (19), Pavan Sreedhar (2) and Muhammad Shanu (18).

Just when the Sailors seemed to have seized control, Sally Samson and Manukrishnan combined to revive the chase. The pair added 77 for the fourth wicket, carefully rebuilding the innings and putting Kochi within touching distance of the target.

With the required run rate under control, Kochi looked increasingly capable of completing the chase. That was until Pavan Raj produced the decisive intervention.

He dismissed Manukrishnan for 37 with a return catch from the fifth delivery of the 17th over. In his next over, Pavan Raj struck twice in successive deliveries to remove Sachin Suresh and Jobin Joby, abruptly shifting the momentum back towards Kollam.

Saly Samson, who had scored a crucial 44, was subsequently dismissed by Vijay Viswanath, leaving Kochi needing 19 runs from the final over with three wickets remaining.

Alfie Francis kept Kochi's hopes alive by hitting two sixes in the final over, but Kollam managed to close out the contest and secure a dramatic three-run victory.

Pavan Raj was the standout bowler for the Sailors, finishing with 3/32 from four overs, while A G Amal contributed two wickets.

The defeat extended Kochi Blue Tigers' difficult run in the tournament, with the defending champions now suffering five losses in a row. For Kollam, the victory was a testament to their ability to recover from adversity. The Blue Tigers are struggling at the bottom of the table with just 2 points in six matches, while Sailors move up to 2nd with 7 points in six matches.
