Keshav Maharaj Scripts History For South Africa, Becomes First Spinner To Achieve THIS Feat

Veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj etched his name into South African cricketing history on June 29, becoming the first spinner from the country to claim 200 Test wickets.

The remarkable milestone was achieved during the opening Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, marking a major moment in the 35-year-old's illustrious red-ball career.

Maharaj reached the landmark in the 34th over of Zimbabwe's innings when he dismissed rival captain Craig Ervine, who was stumped by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne. The moment was not just significant for Maharaj personally but also for South African cricket, where pacers have traditionally dominated the Test scene.

Playing in his 51st Test since debuting in 2016, Maharaj had already overtaken the legendary Hugh Tayfield - previously South Africa's most successful spinner - who finished his career with 170 wickets.

With this latest feat, Maharaj further solidifies his status as the most accomplished spin bowler in the country's Test history. He now sets his sights on surpassing Vernon Philander, the former seamer who ended his career with 224 Test wickets.

In addition to his success with the ball, Maharaj made a handy contribution with the bat in the first innings, scoring a quick 30-ball 21 from the No. 9 position. His knock added to South Africa's commanding total of 418/9, built on the back of a dream debut from teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who played one of the most memorable first Test innings in recent history.

At just 19 years and 93 days, Pretorius hammered a magnificent 153, becoming the youngest South African to score a century on Test debut. Walking in with his team reeling at 23/3, the left-hander turned the game around, smashing four sixes and eleven boundaries in his 160-ball stay. "He smiled at Wiaan Mulder after hitting a six off the fourth ball he faced," noted commentators, underlining his fearless approach.

Corbin Bosch added to the batting fireworks, bringing up an unbeaten hundred from No. 8 in the final over of Day 1, giving South Africa the perfect platform to dominate the Test.

Despite a controversial moment when Zimbabwe players believed Pretorius had edged one on 30 - which was turned down - the young batter made the most of his chance, showing poise well beyond his years.
