With just days left for the IPL retention 2025 deadline, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have finally engaged in discussions with their captain, Shreyas Iyer. As per a TOI report, a source revealed that initial talks took place over the weekend.
This marked the first interaction between KKR and Iyer about his future with the franchise. Speculation around Iyer's retention had been circulating, as the defending IPL champions had reportedly not approached him until now, despite the October 31 deadline.

Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 with the guidance of then-mentor Gautam Gambhir, remains a sought-after leader in the IPL circuit. His leadership credentials are highlighted by a past captaincy stint that took Delhi Capitals to the finals in 2020.
This has also made him an attractive prospect for multiple franchises seeking a leader. According to industry insiders, if KKR doesn't retain Iyer, teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) would likely vie for his services.
KKR faces a challenging decision in finalizing their retentions as they aim to balance Iyer's leadership value with the need to secure other key players. Franchise sources suggest that Iyer is currently not the top priority in KKR's retention list, despite his successful captaincy.
The Kolkata-based franchise is expected to retain Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, and Sunil Narine. Additionally, they may exercise the Right to Match (RTM) option to bring back Varun Chakravarthy and one among Venkatesh Iyer or Nitish Rana.
KKR's hesitation in promptly retaining Iyer has surprised many, especially considering his role in their 2024 title-winning season. However, KKR is undergoing a significant transition in its support staff, with Gautam Gambhir, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Abhishek Nayar leaving for coaching roles with the Indian cricket team.
These changes indicate that KKR may adopt a fresh strategy for the upcoming season, potentially reshaping the team's leadership. As KKR deliberates its retention options, Iyer's future with the franchise remains uncertain. If he is not retained, KKR will join several teams likely seeking leadership talent at the upcoming mega auction.
