KKR vs CSK: Dropped or Injury? Why is Venkatesh Iyer not Playing today for Kolkata Knight Riders?

By MyKhel Staff

In a notable move by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Venkatesh Iyer has been excluded from the playing XI for their high-voltage IPL 2025 fixture against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Venkatesh Iyer, retained for a hefty sum ahead of the 2025 season, was expected to play a crucial role as a top-order aggressor and a part-time bowling option. However, the left-hander has fallen well short of expectations, both with the bat and the ball.

Despite being handed ample opportunities in the top four, Iyer failed to make a meaningful impact. His inability to convert starts into substantial scores and the lack of match-winning innings have put pressure on the KKR think tank. Moreover, his bowling utility has been almost non-existent this season, further reducing his value in the lineup.

KKR vs CSK: Why is Venkatesh Iyer not Playing Today?

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane said at the Toss that Venkatesh Iyer is not playing against CSK today. Rahane mentioned that the KKR player has stitches in his hands and that is the reason for his omission. But along with that, the form has also been a concern for Iyer, who hasn't been able to justify his price tag of Rs 23.75 crore.

Venkatesh Iyer is Dropped or Rested?

It is still an enigma. Although KKR's captain cited his injury as the reason, the lack of form can be a reason as well. Despite being the designated vice-captain, Iyer was overlooked for captaincy duties in Ajinkya Rahane's absence, indicating a potential shift in leadership dynamics.

Incidentally, Iyer was not sent in to bat against Rajasthan Royals, with the team preferring other players like Andre Russell and Rinku Singh in key positions. The recent developments have indicated the struggle of Venkatesh in the KKR team and his omission can stem from that as well. Although it officially is an injury, the theory of axing the southpaw can be a reason in hindsight.
