KKR vs DC: 'They should dance only for the sixes' - Varun Chakravarthy goes sympathetic for Cheerleaders

Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy voiced his concern for the cheerleaders amid the scorching heat of Kolkata after their IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Monday (April 29).

Varun Chakravarthy came back to form with three wickets against DC as KKR registered an important victory at the Eden Gardens. The spinner got the big scalps of Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs, and conceded only 16 runs in his four overs, which earned him the Player of the Match award.

At the post-match presentation, Varun was asked about an Instagram post that he made sparing a thought on the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders in IPL for respective teams dance after a boundary is scored while batting, or when a wicket falls when bowling. In the meantime, they are prompted to dance in between overs as well.

In the scorching heat and humidity of India at this time, the cheerleaders' job is very tough. And in this season, with the boundaries galore, that has gone tougher. The Cheerleaders are now dancing in almost 30 to 40 per cent of the 120 balls in innings, given the number of boundaries and sixes that have been scored this season.

And the KKR spinner says the cheerleaders must be only dancing when a team hits a six.

"(Given the boundaries being scored this season) Unfortunately that has become the trend and maybe they should dance only for the sixes and not for fours," Varun Chakravarthy said at the post-match presentation.

But when asked if they should dance after the fall of a wicket, the KKR spinner was quick to approve that. He also opened up on the wicket of Rishabh Pant and said the first ball where Pant's catch got dropped was a better delivery.

"The first ball, when the catch was dropped, I think that was a better ball. The ball that got him out, might have gone for six on any other ground. Cricket has become a game of fine margins," he added, citing that Tristan Stubbs' dismissal was the favourite one for him.

KKR won the match comfortably and have now 12 points in nine matches. They will face Mumbai Indians next on May 4.
