KKR vs MI, IPL 2024 Match 60: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs on Saturday to become the first team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. This was KKR's ninth win in 12 matches. They still have two league games left this season, and are almost certain of a top two finish now.
After being asked to bat first, KKR scored 157/7 in the rain-marred game which was reduced to 16-over per side game. Phil Salt was dismissed by Nuwan Thushara in the first over, while Sunil Narine was clean bowled for a first-ball duck in the second over from Jasprit Bumrah.

Captain Shreyas Iyer could also not do much and was castled by Anshul Kamboj for 7 off 10. But Venkatesh Iyer (42 off 21), and Nitish Rana (33 off 23) built the tempo for KKR. Rana replaced Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the match. While Rana got run out, Venkatesh was dismissed by Piyush Chawla.
Later, fireworks from Andre Russell (24 off 14), Rinku Singh (20 off 12) and Ramandeep Singh (17* off 8) took KKR past 150. The 2-time champions collected 41 runs in the last four overs. Bumrah and Chawla picked two wickets each.
In reply, Impact Substitute Rohit Sharma (19 off 24) and Ishan Kishan (40 off 22) joined forces to take Mumbai to 59 without any loss at the end of Powerplay (5 overs for the match). However, the innings soon collapsed after the dismissal of Ishan and Rohit in the seventh and eighth overs respectively.
Varun Chakravarthy, who dismissed Rohit, struck for the second time to dismiss Hardik Pandya (2 off 4). He finished with figures of 2/17 in four overs. Andre Russell also chipped in with the wickets of Suryakumar Yadav (11off 14). and Tim David (0).
There was a 24-run partnership off 11 balls between Nehal Wadhera (3) and Tilak Varma (32 off 17), but it ended in an unlucky fashion after the former got run out. Naman Dhir scored 17 runs off six balls towards the end, but the five-time champions fell short by 18 runs, and succumbed to their ninth defeat of the season.
Hardik Pandya (MI Captain): "Tough one, yeah. As a batting unit, the foundation was there but we could not capitalize after that and keep the momentum up. The wicket was a little up and down and a little tacky so momentum was very important. I think it was a par score, given the conditions, felt that the bowlers did well. Every ball that came back from the boundary came back wet.
"The bowlers made sure they kept taking wickets. (On his thoughts for the next game) Nothing, just to go and enjoy as much as we can and play good cricket, that’s been my motto from the start. I don’t think we’ve played enough good cricket this season."
Shreyas Iyer (KKR captain): "I think I manifested this before the game (on becoming the 1st side to qualify for the playoffs). Nerves were there, boys have been raising their hands and there have been many game-changers and kudos to each and every one of them. I feel whichever team plays the best, they got a great chance to win.
"They were going at great guns in the first 6 overs, and to bounce back from that situation it was nice to see. I wasn't thinking about stats or records, the weather wasn't great but we won the game and that's what is more important. It's all about understanding which bowler is doing well on that particular day, I feel both of them bowled well and my gut went with Varun (on bowling the 4th over) at that point and I backed him."
Varun Chakravarthy (Man of the Match): The plan was to make him (Rohit) hit across the line, obviously there was help from the wicket and I was able to use it to my advantage. Tactically we (talking about Narine) are similar, but technically we are slightly different. The wickets were too flat initially, my bowling has been same from the first match and it is just that the results are showing up now.
