KKR vs PBKS IPL 2025: Unprecedented Power Outage Hits Eden Gardens As Rain Interrupts Play

KKR vs PBKS: Eden Gardens witnessed an unprecedented incident during the IPL 2025 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on 26th April, Sunday.

Despite Punjab setting a challenging target of 202 runs, the real drama unfolded off the field when a sudden gust of wind, followed by heavy rain, triggered a power outage inside the stadium's Club House and press box as reported by OneIndia Bangla.

Remarkably, the floodlights remained unaffected, ensuring the match continued without disruption.

However, the Club House - including VIP and corporate boxes - plunged into darkness. Even near the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Snehasish Ganguly's room, it became pitch black. Ganguly himself stepped out to assess the situation, as many used mobile phone flashlights to navigate the area.

Although no major incident occurred, concerns were raised over security lapses in such a high-profile zone. A former CAB official noted that while Eden Gardens has previously faced minor lighting issues, a blackout in the Club House was unheard of in decades.

The incident also impacted the press box, leaving journalists struggling without electricity and television feeds for an extended period. Some media personnel criticized Media Manager Aritra Chowdhury for not providing adequate support during the outage, and questions were raised about his handling of media accreditations in light of BCCI guidelines.

By 9:30 PM, around 34,040 spectators had gathered inside Eden Gardens, but such incidents could tarnish the stadium's reputation in hosting high-voltage matches.

CAB is yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the power failure.

Earlier, Punjab Kings thanks to fiery knocks from young Priyansh Arya (69 off 35) and Prabhsimran Singh (83 off 49) got their team to a huge total. Shreyas Iyer, captaining PBKS, chipped in with a handy 25*. Despite Vaibhav Arora's two crucial wickets for KKR, Punjab's batting depth helped them post a competitive score.

In reply, KKR's openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine started cautiously, reaching 7/0 after playing just one over before the heavens opened. Gurbaz is batting on 1, while Narine is on 4.

With Kolkata needing 195 more runs and rain delaying proceedings, the DLS method might come into play if the weather doesn't improve soon and the match has already started losing overs. Punjab will feel confident with the scoreboard pressure already built, but KKR still have powerful hitters like Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Rovman Powell waiting in the wings.
