KKR vs SRH: Abhishek Nayar Backs Cameron Green amid Ajinkya Rahane Comment, Stresses Long Term Vision

As the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gear up to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Eden Gardens this Thursday, the spotlight has fixed heavily on their star all-rounder, Cameron Green.

Following a tough season opener against the Mumbai Indians, where Green had a quiet outing with the bat and did not bowl, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar has come forward to publicly reaffirm the franchise's unwavering faith in the Australian superstar.

KKR vs SRH Abhishek Nayar Backs Cameron Green amid Ajinkya Rahane Comment Stresses Long Term Vision

The scrutiny around Green intensified after KKR's defeat to MI at the Wankhede Stadium. Fans and pundits were left puzzled when KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane opted not to use Green's bowling services. Following the match, a frustrated Rahane didn't beat around the bush at the post-match presentation. When asked why the ₹25.2 crore signing didn't bowl on a seam-friendly Wankhede track, Rahane simply replied, "Ask Cricket Australia."

It has since been revealed by a Cricket Australia (CA) spokesperson that Green is managing a lower-back injury sustained during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. CA has mandated that Green abstain from bowling for the first few matches of the IPL to ensure he is fit for Australia's heavy Test schedule.

Abhishek Nayar Backs Long-Term Vision

Despite the tactical limitations and the opening loss, Abhishek Nayar made it clear on Wednesday that Green remains central to Kolkata's long-term vision. Addressing the media ahead of the SRH clash, Nayar emphasized that the franchise does not judge marquee players based on isolated matches or temporary restrictions.

"From an auction strategy point of view, the idea is never short-term," Nayar stated. "You look at what a player has consistently done over the years and the overall skill set he brings. For us, Cameron Green as a cricketer and an all-rounder was extremely important, and we continue to believe in what he can offer at his best."

The head coach further highlighted that the dressing room atmosphere remains resilient, brushing off the pressure of the initial defeat. Nayar pointed to the mindset of key players.

"There will be phases where things don't go your way, whether it's an individual or the team. But the belief within the group remains strong. Whether it's someone like Varun, who we feel is in a very good mental space, the focus is always on staying positive and backing our players," he added.

As KKR prepares to take on a high-flying SRH batting lineup anchored by Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, the team will need to navigate the balance of their playing 11 without Green's overs for at least another 10 days.
