KL Rahul reveals his 'biggest challenge' in Sri Lanka Tests

India's opener KL Rahul has spoken about the "biggest challenge" he faces in Sri Lanka Tests, which start on July 26.

Colombo, July 22: India's opening batsman KL Rahul has spoken about the "biggest challenge" he faces in the upcoming three-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Rahul, who is back in the team after nearly four months away from cricket due to shoulder injury, scored a half century yesterday (July 21) in a 2-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Board President's XI.

The 25-year-old right-hander feels the first 20-25 overs of a Test in Sri Lanka will be the "biggest challenge" for Indian openers.

He also spoke about his experience of 2015 tour to the island nation where he scored a hundred but had only single digits in rest of the 5 innings. He had scores of 7, 5, 108, 2, 2 and 2 in three Tests. India won the series 2-1, first for Virat Kohli as captain.

"As far as I remember, all the Test matches were very competitive (during last tour tour to Sri Lanka in 2015). The pitches here are very helpful for whoever does well," Rahul told the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) website on Friday (July 21).

He continued, "Fast bowlers have something (for them) in the wicket, the ball will spin and bounce a little bit, but if you apply yourself, you will get a lot of runs. I did get one hundred and I will think of all the positives. The injury has taught me to be a lot more positive, just keep the negatives away.

"What I learnt from the last tour was, I left a few balls and got bowled. I went back and worked a lot on my batting. I decided to play a lot more closer to the body and the Kookaburra ball does a little bit for the first 20-25 overs and then you can play your shots and get a lot of runs. So, the first 20-25 overs will be the biggest challenge and if I can fight through that as an opening batsman, then there are a lot of runs to be made."

Rahul was sidelined due to a shoulder injury which he sustained during India-Australia Test in February. He missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC Champions Trophy.

India and Sri Lanka will play 3 Tests, 5 One Day Internationals and 1 Twenty20 International. The 1st Test starts on July 26.
