KL Rahul To Play Ranji Trophy For Karnataka, Set To Play Against Haryana : Report

By MyKhel Staff

KL Rahul is all set to mark his return to the first-class format as Karnataka prepare to face Haryana in their final Ranji Trophy league-stage clash in Bengaluru.

After missing the previous match against Punjab due to a minor niggle, the 32-year-old batter is expected to strengthen Karnataka's lineup as they push for a crucial bonus-point victory to boost their qualification chances.

KL Rahul

According to a report by The Times of India, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President Raghuram Bhat confirmed Rahul's availability for the fixture. "I am not in Bengaluru at the moment but from the information I have received, he is available for the last Ranji Trophy match," the report quoted Bhat as saying.

Rahul's return comes as part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) renewed mandate encouraging senior players to participate in domestic cricket. This initiative follows India's disappointing 1-3 series loss in Australia, which not only ended their chances of making it to the World Test Championship final but also raised questions about the form and match readiness of key players.

Rahul, one of the few Indian players to impress during the Australian series, showcased his adaptability by opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first Test at Perth, helping India secure a victory. His presence in Karnataka's Ranji Trophy squad adds experience and stability to a side that has been performing well under the leadership of Mayank Agarwal.

The versatile batter is expected to play a pivotal role in Karnataka's campaign, but it remains unclear whether he will reprise his role as an opener or slot into the middle order. There is also speculation about whether he might take up wicketkeeping duties, further emphasizing his all-around contribution to the team.

Senior Players Return to Domestic Cricket

The BCCI's push for senior cricketers to participate in domestic tournaments has seen a host of Indian stars returning to the Ranji Trophy. Virat Kohli is set to play for Delhi, marking his first first-class appearance in 13 years, while Mohammed Siraj will represent Hyderabad. Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Ravindra Jadeja have already featured in earlier rounds, ensuring that India's premier domestic competition benefits from the experience of its international players.

This move is seen as a strategic effort by the BCCI to help senior players regain form and stay match-ready ahead of the new World Test Championship cycle. With Rahul's return, Karnataka will not only gain an experienced campaigner but also align with the broader objective of elevating the domestic game's competitiveness.

The upcoming match against Haryana provides Rahul with the perfect opportunity to sharpen his skills and regain rhythm in the red-ball format. As Karnataka looks to maintain their winning momentum, all eyes will be on Rahul's performance and his role in guiding the team to a strong finish in the league stage.
