KL Rahul's performance and batting position will be closely observed by the national selectors as he prepares to play for India A against Australia A. The match, featuring experienced bowler Scott Boland, begins on Thursday at the MCG.
Apart from Rahul, no other player in the India A team has played at this iconic venue, where India will also play the Boxing Day Test starting December 26.

Rahul was dropped midway through the home Tests against New Zealand. The selectors, in consultation with team management, decided to send him and reserve keeper Dhruv Jurel for the second A Test before joining the senior team in Perth on November 11. This decision aims to provide them with valuable match practice ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The India A team will see four changes from the squad that lost the first unofficial Test at Mackay by seven wickets. Rahul replaces Baba Indrajith, who struggled against pace and bounce, scoring only 9 and 6. Jurel takes over from Ishan Kishan, who was involved in a ball change controversy at Mackay.
Navdeep Saini, who had a poor game, will be replaced by left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed. Off-spinner all-rounder Tanush Kotian will come in for slow left-arm orthodox Manav Suthar. Keeper-batter Abhishek Porel and middle-order batsman Ricky Bhui will miss out on playing time.
Facing Boland will be a tough test for players like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad, B Sai Sudharsan, and Devdutt Padikkal. However, Rahul is expected to draw the most attention due to his potential inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad. His experience against quality fast bowling in bouncy conditions gives him an edge over domestic players like Sarfaraz Khan.
During practice sessions at the MCG, Rahul appeared to be in good form. Easwaran and captain Gaikwad are likely to open the innings, with Rahul expected to bat at No. 5 or 6. This position aligns with where he might play if selected for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches.
Rahul's past performances include centuries at Lord's, Oval, Sydney, and Centurion. These achievements make him more suited for challenging conditions compared to Sarfaraz Khan. Despite Sarfaraz's impressive 150 at Bengaluru, Rahul remains a strong contender for selection at Optus Stadium starting November 22.
The upcoming matches are crucial for both Rahul and Jurel as they aim to secure their spots in the senior team. Their performances against Australia A will provide insights into their readiness for international challenges ahead.
