With the sudden retirement of Dhoni from Tests last week, Kohli has been appointed as full-time captain. He will be at the helm, for the second time, in Sydney tomorrow in the fourth and final Test against Australia.

Speaking to the media for the first time as India's full-fledged Test skipper, Kohli revealed, as others had, he too was surprised by Dhoni's decision to quit. (10 questions to Dhoni)

"It was a surprise (Dhoni's decision to retire from Tests) for everyone. After the match we were changing and packing our stuff and that's when he announced his decision. We didn't know how to react. We were all stunned. It was so sudden, we had no clue. We never saw it coming," Kohli said in Sydney on Monday.

"It was a very emotional moment for him and also for young players including me who started playing international cricket under his captaincy," he added.

The right-hander from Delhi hoped to be as calm as Dhoni in his Test leadership. "I always like to take his input because of the experience he has in international cricket in facing all sorts of situations.

"I hope I can be as calm as he is. Everyone has different styles but as long as you keep taking in the positives from others, you will improve," he said.

Kohli, who hit centuries in both innings of Adelaide Test, his first as captain, said they wanted to become a strong side. "The collective vision is to become a strong Test side because there is a lot of ability and talent," Kohli said.

"Commanding the position will come in some time and we want to be able to dictate terms when we go out there to play," he added. (Dhoni's Test achievements)

Australia have already sealed the four-match series 2-0. They won the opening two matches in Adelaide and Brisbane. The third Test in Melbourne was drawn.
