Andre Russell rose to the occasion when it mattered the most as the West Indies giant unleashed his beast mode and smashed 70 off 31 balls to guide Kolkata Knight Riders to a big win over Punjab Kings in the IPL 2022.
Chasing a below-par 138 on Wankhede Stadium pitch where chasing sides emerge victorious more often than not, KKR reached home in 14.3 overs.
The Knights registered an emphatic win by six wickets, with 33 balls to spare.
Knight Riders didn't have the best of starts in the run chase as openers Ajinkya Rahane (12) and Venkatesh Iyer (3) failed to give a fine start.
Captain Shreyas Iyer scored valuable 26 off 15 deliveries before getting dismissed by Rahul Chahar soon after powerplay. Chahar then dismissed Nitish Rana for a duck to put KKR under some pressure.
But the overseas pros in Sam Billings (24* off 23) and Russell propelled their team home comfortably. The duo stitched an unbeaten partnership of 90 off just 45 deliveries to take their team home. Russell was the one who did all the heavy lifting for the men in purple.
Russell's knock was laced with 8 sixes and two four as the swashbuckler scored at an incredible strike rate of 225.81.
Punjab bowlers had an off day as Dre Russ muscled Punjab bowlers. Kagiso Rabada and Chahar bowled well but perhaps they had too less to defend.
From the highs of chasing a mammoth in their previous game, Punjab Kings touched a low in their next game as they were bundled out for a paltry 137 against Kolkata Knight Riders.
The batting never really clicked for Punjab Kings in the game after they were put in to bat first by KKR captain Shreyas Iyer.
Umesh Yadav continued to pick up a wicket in his first over when he trapped Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal in front with a beauty. Mayank was dismissed for 1 while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan was removed by New Zealand pacer Tim Southee for 16.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa played a cameo of 9-ball 31 as the right-handed batter smashed three maximums and as many fours in his short stay. The Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman fell off Shivam Mavi's delivery as Kings were three down in powerplay.
KKR skipper introduced in-form Umesh in the middle overs and the India quick got the wicket of dangerous-looking Liam Livingstone for 19.
Umesh then ended up claiming two more wickets as he finished with impeccable figures of (4 overs, 1 maiden, 23 runs and 4 wickets).
Southee also looked in his elements with the ball as the right-arm speedster dismissed Shahrukh Khan for a duck.
The mystery spinners' duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy bowled miserly and laid the foundation for the Knights.
With this win, KKR now sit at the top of the table with 4 points and healthy net run rate.

Kolkata Knight Riders will look to put on a better batting display tonight when they take on Punjab Kings in match 8 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Shreyas Iyer-led KKR opened their 2022 campaign with a win against Chennai Super Kings, but lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore after their batters faltered. However, the KKR bowlers took the game as deep as possible trying to defend a paltry total. In the end, they suffered a 3-wicket loss.
Despite the loss, KKR may stick to the same playing 11, retaining Tim Southee, who looked impressive in the match against RCB along with Umesh Yadav. Andre Russell seemed to have picked up an injury in the last match. So, his unavailability as a bowler may prompt a change.
Venkatesh Iyer is capable enough to bowl the full quota of four overs should KKR stick to the same line-up and play Russell as just a batter.
Mayank Agarwal's PBKS, meanwhile, got their season off to a great start, chasing down 206 with an over to spare and 4 wickets in hand against RCB. So, the Punjab side will be confident of staying unbeaten.
PBKS will look to bring in pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who will most likely replace youngster Raj Bawa in the playing 11 as they had played with just three overseas players against RCB. The South African speedster will add the much needed strength to their pace department.
The match is taking place at Wankhede, where we have witnessed two games so far ending in the favour of the chasing team and also on both occasions, the captain won the toss. So, the pattern may continue with dew setting in early creating trouble in bowlers gripping the ball.
