Kuldeep or Axar: Tricky dilemma for Team India in first Test against Bangladesh

By Indranil Basu

India indeed faces a tricky selection dilemma ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai starting from September 19, especially in the spin department. With the inclusion of both Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, the team management will have to decide who among them will get the nod as the third spinner, alongside the already established Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Traditionally, the pitch at Chepauk tends to assist spinners as the match progresses, so the temptation to play three spinners is strong. However, with both Ashwin and Jadeja practically indispensable, the third spinner would need to offer something unique, whether it's wrist spin (Kuldeep) or the all-round ability of Axar.

Kuldeep or Axar

As a matter of fact Kuldeep has been India's go-to wrist-spinner in all formats when the need for a genuine wicket-taking option arises. He offers variety, particularly with his ability to turn the ball both ways, and he can break partnerships on surfaces that offer turn and bounce. His left-arm wrist-spin adds a dimension that isn't covered by Ashwin or Jadeja. If the team is looking for a specialist spinner to penetrate Bangladesh's batting lineup, Kuldeep could be the preferred choice.

Axar, on the other hand, brings more balance to the side with his ability to contribute with the bat lower down the order. His batting could be particularly valuable in case of any top-order collapses, and he's shown in recent times that he can play crucial innings.

Axar's left-arm orthodox bowling also complements the spin attack, and while he may not offer the same variety as Kuldeep, his ability to keep things tight and pick up wickets consistently makes him a reliable option. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj likely to be the two pacers, and Ashwin and Jadeja as certain picks, the management will weigh whether they need the extra batting depth or an aggressive wicket-taking option in Kuldeep.

If the team anticipates needing runs from the lower order, Axar's batting could tilt the balance in his favor. If the pitch is expected to offer more turn or the team needs an aggressive spin attack, Kuldeep might get the edge. Historically, both Kuldeep and Axar have performed well against Bangladesh, and their recent form will also play a part in the decision.

Kuldeep's variations might be more challenging for Bangladesh's middle order, while Axar's consistent bowling and utility with the bat can make him a safer all-round option. It appears that the decision between Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel will come down to the specific conditions in Chennai and the team's tactical approach.

If India opts for an all-out attack, Kuldeep might edge ahead due to his wicket-taking ability, while if the team wants more balance and batting depth, could be the preferred choice. Either way, it's a tough call, and India will benefit from the depth and variety both bring to the squad.
