Kumar Sangakkara move which can help Rahul Dravid become Rajasthan Royals head coach once again

By MyKhel Staff

Rahul Dravid is no longer the head coach of India cricket team, and his possible comeback to the Indian Premier League (IPL) is in focus now. Cricket pundits have already started predicting the teams who can appoint him as their new head coach.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are two teams Rahul Dravid has coached in the past, and the two teams can approach him once again ahead of IPL 2025.

Delhi Capitals have ended their seven-year association with Ricky Ponting, and reports are also emerging that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are considering Kumar Sangakkara for the head coach position of their white-ball team.

In case Sangakkara, who has been in-charge of Rajasthan Royals for the last four seasons, opts to take the England job, a vacancy will open up at the Sanju Samson-led team. It will help Rajasthan Royals get their former captain and coach onboard in the most smooth fashion.

Former Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara is believed to be close to Rob Key, the managing director of England men's side. Also, he has developed a good rapport with England white-ball captain Jos Buttler, who plays for Rajasthan Royals.

Sangakkara was recently asked about his view on coaching the England ODI and T20I sides, and he responded by calling it an 'exciting prospect'.

"Well, I know my name has been mentioned for some reason, but there has not been any approach as such. I think the England white-ball job is an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are so many good candidates out there. I am very happy at the moment. The Rajasthan Royals experience has been very fulfilling and it has been a job I have really enjoyed over the last four years," Sangakkara was quoted as saying in the English media recently.

Australian Matthew Mott stepped down from the role even before the end of his tenure after England failed to defend their second consecutive world title in two years. England qualified for the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2024 but lost to eventual champions India, but finished seventh in 10-team ODI World Cup 2023.

Marcus Trescothick was recently named as England interim head coach for next month's five-match home ODI series against Australia. "There will be an interview process at some point but there is no shortlist as of now," an ECB official recently said.
