'Lack of Quality Spinners in India Right Now' - Sehwag Reveals Why Indian Batters Struggle Against Spin

By MyKhel Staff

Former opener Virender Sehwag weighed in on latest topic in cricket, the Indian batters' struggles against spin, giving two possible reasons for the issues when facing tweakers in international cricket.

In a recent tour to Sri Lanka, the Indian batters failed to cope spin in the three-match ODI series. India lost the series 0-2 with the first match ending in a tie after Rohit Sharma and co. failed to get to the target of 231.

In the second ODI, India were bowled out for 208 when chasing 241, while they succumbed to 128 all out in the run chase of 249 in the third and final match of the series as the batting unit including Rohit and Virat Kohli fell to Sri Lanka's spinners.

This isn't the first time, the current Indian batters have shown signs of struggles when facing spinners. And Sehwag revealed the reasons why Rohit & Co have looked clueless against spin.

The former opener said that one of the reasons for Indian batters to fail against spin is the lack of quality spinners available in the country right now, and blamed T20 cricket for the reduced wicket-taking deliveries.

"One reason for this is that the more white ball cricket there is, the less spinners will come, because in T20 cricket you bowl 24 balls and do not flight them, so you do not develop the skill to get the batsman out. I think that could be one reason," Sehwag told Amar Ujala.

"Indian players also play less domestic cricket. In domestic cricket you get to play more spin than in international cricket. So that can also be a reason. I think there are no quality spinners in India right now whom I see who can fly well and take wickets."

Sehwag also said the current cricketers don't play enough domestic cricket in the longer format and the limited overs games. But felt the many different leagues resulting in a packed schedule is also something that does not allow batters to develop skill of tackling spin.

"In our time, Dravid, Sachin, Ganguly, Laxman, Yuvraj, all of us used to play domestic cricket too, whether it was ODI or four-day cricket, we used to play a lot of domestic cricket.

"We used to play a lot of spinners in those matches, but in today's busy schedule, players are getting less time. There are different leagues, due to which the skill of playing spin is not being developed by the players," he added.
