Lalu, Swamy train their guns on IPL; want it closed down

By Anita
New Delhi, May 18: This years Indian Premier League (IPL) was nothing short of dramatic, after the spot fixing scandal, actor Shahrukh Khan's ban from the Wankhede stadium and the latest being the assault case against Royal Challengers Bangalore player Luke Pomersbach. Irked by all the negative publicity the IPL is garnering, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy demanded that the high profile tournament be closed down.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, Lalu said, “IPL should be closed." He was commenting on the recent spat between Shahrukh and the Mumbai Cricket Association when he made this bold comment. Explaining further on the scuffle, he alleged that the policemen who were present there during the time of the scuffle were working at the behest of certain political parties. Lalu added, “All this was done in hatred."

Subramanian Swamy, also chose strong words in the wake of the controversy surrounding the IPL and demanded a ban. He said in a statement, “I demand that the government ban the IPL tournament forthwith since game's collateral consequences are a degeneration of a civilised game of cricket into a vulgar display of money, immorality, all converting into a serious national security threat."

He added, “The recent incident of vulgar, unruly, rowdy behaviour of some of the players, owners and politicians make it necessary to impose this ban for a brief period."

Swamy also said that the ban could be lifted after all persons actively involved in the cinema world or who hold an elected office in politics was barred from management or ownership of teams.
