Legends Cricket League: Manager charged with Match Fixing Allegations after International Stars launch complaint

By MyKhel Staff

Yoni Patel, a cricket team manager for the Legends Cricket League 2024 has been charged with serious allegations of match-fixing in Sri Lanka.

The Attorney General's office has formally indicted him before the Colombo High Court. These charges arise from accusations made by cricket legends Neil Broom of the Punjab Royals and Upul Tharanga of the Kandy Samp Army. Both players have come forward with claims that Patel pressured them into manipulating the outcomes of their games. This development casts a shadow over the integrity of the sport and the league.

The controversy began when allegations surfaced of attempts to fix matches in the Legend Cricket League. Reports suggest that players were offered money to underperform, directly affecting the competition's fairness.

The Colombo Magistrate's court, upon reviewing the evidence, issued a travel ban against Patel and another team manager, P. Akash, preventing them from leaving Sri Lanka. This legal action underscores the severity of the situation and the commitment to upholding sportsmanship and integrity in cricket.

The Legend Cricket League was held from March 8 to 19 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The seven participating teams were made up of retired cricketers from cricketing powerhouses like England, Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Owned by international business magnates, the league aimed to offer a platform for legends of the game to showcase their talents once more. Despite its lack of official affiliation with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the league enjoyed significant attention, partly due to its role as a competitor to India's Road Safety series.

This case has not only put the spotlight on Yoni Patel but also raised questions about the safeguards against corruption in independently organized sports leagues.
