Lord’s Braces for £4 Million Revenue Loss as India Miss Out On WTC 2025 Final: Here's Why

WTC Final 2025: The iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, set to host the final of the 2025 edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) from June 11-15, is facing a significant financial setback following India's failure to qualify for the summit clash.

Defending champions Australia will take on table-toppers South Africa in the much-anticipated final, marking the first time the historic venue will host a WTC final.

WTC Final

According to a report by The Times, Lord's stands to lose nearly £4 million in revenue due to India's absence from the marquee fixture. Organisers had initially priced tickets at a premium, expecting high demand from Indian fans. However, with Rohit Sharma-led Team India missing out on the final, the financial projections have taken a hit.

"Organisers had originally priced tickets at a premium rate, believing India fan demand would outstrip supply, but the absence of India has significantly curtailed the financial windfall expected by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), underscoring the financial influence of Indian cricket across the global game," the report stated.

India, the favourites to reach their third consecutive WTC final, saw their campaign derailed by a shocking 0-3 home series defeat against New Zealand, followed by a 1-3 loss to Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. These setbacks ensured they missed out on a top-two finish in the WTC standings, dashing hopes of another appearance at Lord's.

Ticket Price Adjustments to Avoid Sparse Crowds

In response to the lower-than-expected demand, MCC opted to reduce ticket prices. The revised rates now range between £40 and £90, approximately £50 cheaper than the original pricing. The decision was taken to prioritise a fuller, more vibrant stadium over the risk of a sparsely populated venue with overpriced seats.

"The decision to be flexible with prices for the World Test Championship final was taken this year, with tickets now being sold at between £40 and £90-about £50 cheaper than they had originally been priced, accounting for the loss in revenue," The Times reported. Furthermore, MCC members who had already purchased tickets at the original price have been refunded the difference.

India-England Test at Lord's Still on the Horizon

Despite the financial hit from the WTC final, Lord's will still host a high-profile fixture later in the summer. The venue is set to stage the third Test of the India-England series from July 10-14. This match is expected to witness a significant turnout, helping MCC recover some of its financial losses.

With India's absence from the WTC final causing a major revenue shortfall, the situation highlights the immense commercial pull of Indian cricket on the global stage. The final, while still set to be a thrilling contest, may not generate the same level of enthusiasm and financial windfall as initially anticipated.
