Last-Ball Run-Out Seals Historic MLC Title for Los Angeles Knight Riders

Los Angeles Knight Riders clinched their first Major League Cricket (MLC) title after defeating defending champions Washington Freedom by one run in a dramatic final that went down to the last ball at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday.

Needing four runs from the final two deliveries, Washington appeared on course to force a Super Over before Lahiru Milantha was run out attempting a second run off the final ball, handing the Knight Riders a historic victory after falling short in the league's first three seasons.

Shadley van Schalkwyk delivers under pressure

Washington entered the final over requiring 14 runs, with Shadley van Schalkwyk entrusted to defend the total of 164.

The over began in the worst possible fashion as Obus Pienaar launched the first delivery for six to bring up his maiden T20 half-century and reduce the equation significantly.

Van Schalkwyk, however, responded brilliantly. He yorked Pienaar on the very next ball before dismissing Ian Holland to swing the momentum back in Los Angeles' favour.

Lockie Ferguson struck a boundary to keep Washington alive, but Van Schalkwyk conceded only singles from the final two deliveries. Milantha's desperate attempt to complete a match-tying second run ended in a run out, sealing a memorable one-run win for the Knight Riders.

Sunil Narine and Jason Holder laid the foundation

Los Angeles' bowlers ensured their below-par total remained competitive.

Sunil Narine ripped through Washington's top order in the powerplay, dismissing Mitchell Owen, Steven Smith and Rachin Ravindra to finish with figures of 3 for 13.

His spell continued an outstanding MLC campaign, with the veteran spinner establishing himself as one of the tournament's most effective new-ball bowlers.

Jason Holder then struck at crucial moments in the middle overs, removing Nikhil Chaudhary, Ben Dwarshuis and Andries Gous to finish with 3 for 31.

Holder also reached another personal milestone during the spell, becoming only the latest bowler to claim 400 wickets in T20 cricket.

Andre Fletcher gives Knight Riders a flying start

Earlier, Los Angeles made 164 after being put in to bat.

Andre Fletcher provided early momentum with a brisk 47 off 27 balls, dominating the powerplay with aggressive strokeplay against Ben Dwarshuis and Lockie Ferguson.

Colin Munro added 40, while Matthew Tromp's 39 proved equally valuable after Washington's spinners had dragged the innings back.

Nikhil Chaudhary dismissed Fletcher before removing Andre Russell for a duck in the same over, while Rachin Ravindra accounted for both Munro and Narine to leave the Knight Riders under pressure midway through the innings.

Tromp's late contribution eventually pushed Los Angeles beyond 160, a total that ultimately proved just enough.

Pienaar nearly completes remarkable comeback

Washington's chase looked in trouble after Narine's powerplay burst, but Gous and Chaudhary rebuilt with a 65-run partnership to keep the defending champions in contention.

After Holder dismantled the middle order, Pienaar launched a stunning late assault.

The left-hander struck Ali Khan for 4, 6 and 4 in the penultimate over before taking Van Schalkwyk for two sixes to leave Washington needing just 14 from the last over.

His dismissal at the start of the 20th over, however, shifted the balance once again as Los Angeles held their nerve to complete a famous victory.

Knight Riders crowned champions for the first time

The victory marked a significant turnaround for the Los Angeles Knight Riders, who had managed just five wins across the previous three MLC seasons and had never reached the playoffs before this campaign.

Their maiden postseason appearance ended with the franchise lifting its first Major League Cricket trophy, completing an impressive transformation built around experienced internationals and timely contributions throughout the knockout stages.
