Lowest Totals Defended in T20 World Cup: Bangladesh Set Record By Defending 106 Against Nepal

Bangladesh created a new record for lowest total defended in T20 World Cup on Monday (June 17) with the successful defence of 106 against Nepal in a Group D match of the 2024 edition at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib's career-best figures of 4 for 7 with an astounding 21 dot balls headlined Bangladesh's dominant bowling performance as booked the final Super 8 spot of the ongoing tournament with a 21-run win against Nepal in their final group stage game.

Defending a meagre 106 on a testing surface, Tanzim along with seasoned Shakib al Hasan (2/9) and Mustafzur Rahaman (3/7) bowled out Nepal for 85 in 19.2 overs, registering the lowest total defended in the show-piece tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, South Africa had bettered India and Sri Lanka's join record by defending 113 against Bangladesh. In the run chase of 114, Bangladesh fell just shot by 4 runs against the Proteas.

Before South Africa set the record, India had equalled Sri Lanka's record by defending 119 against Pakistan in the same tournament, while the Lankans had held the record by defending 119 against New Zealand in the 2014 edition. Here is a look at the lowest totals defended in a T20 World Cup:

In terms of run-scoring, this has been a dull World Cup as many games have ended in low-scoring affairs with teams posting meagre totals. The 2024 edition saw newcomers Uganda post the joint lowest total in T20 World Cup history.

Uganda also registered three other lowest totals during their debut appearance, posting 39, 40 and 58 in their group stage games with one other match which they finished on the winning side also seeing them post 78/7 in the chase of 77 against Papua New Guinea.

Apart from the minnows, the testing conditions saw even New Zealand and South Africa struggle for runs with the Blackcaps getting bundled out for 75 by Afghanistan. Here is a look at the lowest totals in 2024 T20 World Cup:
