Sri Lankan cricket prodigy Matheesha Pathirana has been making waves in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 as one of the most promising talents. With his exceptional sling action, he currently holds the joint-highest wicket-taker position in the tournament.
In a recent interview, Pathirana revealed that former Indian captain MS Dhoni played a crucial role in shaping his performance in T20 cricket. During his stint with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pathirana had the privilege of playing under Dhoni's captaincy.

He described this experience as a pivotal moment in his career, emphasizing how Dhoni's belief and confidence boosted his performance on the field. "When someone of that calibre puts their faith in you, it instils immense confidence. Not only me but all of us felt inspired by Dhoni's trust and support," commented Pathirana.
Reflecting on what he learned from Dhoni, Pathirana highlighted humility as one of the key traits behind the former India cricketer's success. At 42 years old, Dhoni continues to be one of the fittest cricketers, serving as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes.
Recalling his initial days with Dhoni and other senior players, Pathirana mentioned how they trained him and imparted valuable knowledge about excelling in any T20 game and effectively managing four overs per match. According to Dhoni's advice, avoiding injuries is crucial for achieving great results both for oneself and for the team.
Apart from drawing inspiration from cricket legends like Dhoni and Lasith Malinga (whom he idolizes), Pathirana also finds motivation from another sports superstar – Cristiano Ronaldo.
Admiring Ronaldo's unique celebrations on the football field, Pathirana has incorporated them into his own repertoire. With an impressive tally of 12 wickets in the LPL 2023, Pathirana shared a memorable encounter with Malinga, who was thrilled to see similarities between their bowling actions.
Under the leadership of Niroshan Dickwella, the Colombo Strikers are competing against other formidable teams in the LPL. These include Dambulla Aura led by Kusal Mendis, Galle Titans captained by Dasun Shanaka, B-Love Kandy under Wanindu Hasaranga's captaincy, and defending champions Jaffna Kings led by veteran all-rounder Thisara Perera.
