The players' auction date in Sri Lanka's premier domestic T20 competition i.e. Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 has been revealed by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday (May 3).

This is the second consecutive year that the Lanka Premier League, which has gained a lot of momentum and popularity, has opted for a player auction format to allow the teams to prepare their squad for the next edition. In the initial three editions, players were selected through a player draft.

When Will the LPL 2024 Auction Be Held?

The players' auction of LPL 2024 is scheduled to take place on May 21 2024. The LPL 2024 Auction will commence at Hotel Shangri-La, Colombo at noon (local time) where the fate of several domestic and international cricketers will be sealed.

LPL 2024: What Will Be Each Team's Strength?

Each team has the flexibility of maintaining a squad size ranging from a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 24 players, with a requirement for six overseas players per squad. Additionally, the inclusion of an under-23 Sri Lankan player in the playing XI is mandatory.

Yes, the LPL 2024 Auction proceedings will be broadcast live on both television and digital platforms. The tournament itself is scheduled to take place from July 1st to 21st, commencing in Kandy, moving to Dambulla, and culminating in Colombo for the tournament's decisive phase.

LPL 2024 promises to be a grand spectacle

More than 500 players hailing from 24 cricket-playing nations have submitted their entries for the forthcoming fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024. Scheduled to run from July 1 to 21, the LPL 2024 has attracted players not only from traditional cricketing powerhouses like Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan but also from other ICC full member nations.

These players are eager to secure spots in one of the five teams competing in the Lanka Premier League 2024. The league, inaugurated in 2020, comprises B-love Kandy, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings, Colombo Strikers, and Dambulla Aura, all vying for the prestigious championship title. In the previous LPL 2023 season, B-love Kandy emerged victorious by defeating Dambulla Aura in the final match.

The LPL 2024 season will kick off with a rematch of the last edition's final, featuring Kandy against Dambulla, now rebranded as Dambulla Thunders. The league stage played in a double round-robin format, will witness the top four teams advancing to the playoffs, modelled after the format of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

What Is the LPL 2024 Playoffs Format?

In the playoffs, the top two teams from the points table will face off in Qualifier 1, while the third and fourth-ranked teams will compete in the Eliminator. The winner of the Eliminator and the losing team from Qualifier 1 will then engage in Qualifier 2, determining the finalist who will contend against the victor of Qualifier 1.

The grand finale of the LPL 2024 is slated for July 21, with all playoff matches set to take place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
