LPL 2024: Gurbaz, Shadab power Colombo Strikers to dominant win over Jaffna

By MyKhel Staff

Colombo Strikers secured a dominant 9-wicket win over the Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League 2024 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday (July 14).

This victory keeps the Thisara Perera-led team in third place on the points table with three wins from six matches.

CS vs JK

Chasing a modest target of 110, opener Angelo Perera set an aggressive tone with a quick 16 off 8 balls before getting out early. His partner, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, along with Muhammad Waseem, maintained a high scoring rate despite some rain interruptions. By the end of the powerplay, the Strikers were cruising at 66/1, with Gurbaz in dominant form.

Earlier in the match, Colombo Strikers' bowlers delivered a clinical performance, restricting Jaffna Kings to just 109 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Binura Fernando and Shadab Khan were standout performers. Fernando finished with figures of 2 for 24, while Shadab Khan took an impressive 4 for 10 from his four overs.

Shadab Khan's spell was particularly impactful as he dismantled Jaffna Kings' middle order. He nearly claimed another hat-trick after dismissing Avishka Fernando and Fabian Allen off consecutive balls in the 9th over. Matheesha Pathirana, Thishara Perera, and Isitha Wijesundera also contributed with one wicket each.

Gurbaz and Waseem's Unbeaten Partnership
The unbeaten partnership between Gurbaz and Waseem of 87 runs from just 45 balls ensured that the Strikers reached their target inside 10 overs. This significantly boosted their net run rate. Gurbaz remained unbeaten on 57 off 33 balls, hitting four sixes and four boundaries. He completed his fifty in just 30 deliveries.

Muhammad Waseem provided solid support with his knock of 35 off 18 balls, which included two fours and three sixes. The Strikers finished at 112/1 in just 9.5 overs, wrapping up the game with a whopping 61 balls to spare.

Jaffna Kings' Batting Struggles

Jaffna Kings struggled to establish any momentum during their innings. Opener Pathum Nissanka managed only three runs before being dismissed by Binura Fernando. Kusal Mendis offered some resistance with a brisk 17 off 11 balls, but other top-order batsmen failed to contribute significantly.

Key players like Rilee Rossouw (0), Avishka Fernando (11 off 15), and captain Charith Asalanka (13 off 12) couldn't build meaningful partnerships. In the middle and lower order, Viyaskanth provided some resistance with an unbeaten 25 off 24 balls but lacked support from his teammates.

The disciplined bowling performance from Colombo Strikers ensured that Jaffna Kings were restricted to a below-par score of just 109 for nine wickets. The decision to bowl first paid off handsomely as they kept tight control over Jaffna's batting lineup throughout their innings.

This comprehensive victory not only boosts Colombo Strikers' position on the points table but also enhances their NRR significantly as they continue their campaign in the Lanka Premier League.
