LSG Captaincy Race: Three potential candidates to succeed KL Rahul in IPL 2025

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are facing a crucial decision regarding their captaincy. If reports doing the rounds are to be believed, KL Rahul is likely to be replaced in the wake of a disappointing performance in the last season.

It was also the first time that the Lucknow-based franchise failed to qualify for the playoffs since their debut in IPL 2022. For the record, KL Rahul was drafted by LSG ahead of the IPL 2022 season and was appointed as the captain of the team. Under his leadership, LSG reached the Eliminator in the first two seasons.

However, the team lost collective rhythm and their cumulative performance took a downturn in the 2024 season. They hardly managed to win games as they finished seventh on the points table. Also, there was an incident during the season when LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was seen having an animated discussion with captain Rahul after the team incurred a 10-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

If the Bengaluru-born prefers to leave the team or if he is stripped of captaincy ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, then the LSG will need to consider new leadership options. Let's take a look at the three potential candidates who could take over the captaincy duties.

Nicholas Pooran: The West Indies wicketkeeper-batter is a strong contender for the LSG captaincy post. He was acquired by the franchise in their debut season for a substantial sum of INR 16 crores. Since then, he has been a valuable asset for the team, wherein he scored runs at a rate of knots and pitched in with valuable and match-winning knocks. He has got the taste of leadership experience with the West Indies team, which makes him a compelling choice. Since he has been with the franchise for three seasons, he must have known the team environment very well. Notably, he has already led the team in a few games when Rahul was unavailable.

Krunal Pandya: Krunal Pandya has been with the franchise since their debut season. He has already showcased his leadership capabilities in a few games. He stepped in as the skipper during KL Rahul’s absence last season. Appointing him as the full-time captain could also add a great dimension to the league, especially during matches against Mumbai Indians (MI), where he could face off against his younger brother, Hardik Pandya, in what would create "Pandya brothers rivalry."

Quinton de Kock: The South African wicketkeeper-batter is another good option for the LSG captaincy role. The aggressive wicketkeeper brings a wealth of experience, having led the international teams across formats. His aggressive batting approach and excellent wicket keeping skills make him a dual asset to the Lucknow-based franchise. Being a wicketkeeper has its perks, because De Kock has a unique vantage point on the field, letting him make strategic decisions regarding field placements and bowling changes.
