LSG vs GT, IPL 2025: What was the turning point of the match as Gujarat Titans concede win from strong position?

By MyKhel Staff

LSG vs GT, IPL 2025: In a game that looked firmly under Gujarat Titans' control at one stage, it was a stunning collapse after the 12th over that turned the tide in favour of Lucknow Super Giants.

From a commanding position at 120 for 0, the Titans stumbled their way to 180 for 6, managing just 60 runs while losing six wickets in the final eight overs - a batting slide that ultimately cost them the match.

The opening partnership between Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan was textbook T20 batting. They paced the innings smartly, laying a rock-solid platform and neutralising the early threat posed by the Lucknow new ball attack.

Sudharsan's risk-averse style complemented Gill's aggression perfectly. With the duo reaching their half-centuries and GT sitting comfortably at 120 without loss, a score in excess of 200 looked not only probable but inevitable.

But the momentum shifted sharply in the space of a few overs. Gill's dismissal - caught at long-on off Avesh Khan - cracked the door open, and Lucknow didn't hesitate to barge through. Sudharsan followed soon after, undone by Ravi Bishnoi's zippy wrong 'un. From there on, it was a procession.

Washington Sundar was beaten by another wrong 'un, Jos Buttler was undone by a sharp short ball from Digvesh Rathi, and the experienced lower middle-order simply couldn't adapt to the slowing pitch and LSG's clever changes in pace and length.

What made the collapse even more puzzling was the lack of intent from GT's middle order. Batters failed to rotate strike, pressure mounted, and boundaries dried up. Shardul Thakur's clever variations at the death sealed the deal, with two wickets in the final over further halting GT's already stuttering finish.

In contrast, LSG's chase was built on clarity and aggression. Aiden Markram made full use of the powerplay, while Rishabh Pant provided useful support. Even after both were dismissed, Nicholas Pooran picked up the mantle with a flurry of sixes, making short work of the asking rate and steering Lucknow home with three balls to spare.

But all of that would have been academic had Gujarat batted out the last eight overs with the kind of intent they showed up front. Their dramatic slide after a dream start was the game's turning point - a classic case of a team losing its way after being in complete control.

On a surface that didn't have any nasty surprises, it was the pressure of expectation and some astute bowling from LSG that turned a winning position into a painful defeat for the Titans.

As a result, GT's four-match winning streak came to a halt - not because they were outclassed from the start, but because they let the game slip in the crucial final phase. In T20s, it's not how you start, but how you finish - and Lucknow finished a lot better.
