Marcus Stoinis played a pivotal role, scoring a crucial 45-ball 62, as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) edged past Mumbai Indians (MI) with a four-wicket victory in Tuesday's IPL 2024 encounter at the Ekana Sports Complex in Lucknow.
This win boosted LSG's playoff prospects while deepening MI's struggles in the tournament. MI set a target of 145 after their top order failed to fire, leaving them to scramble to 144/7.

Contributions from Nehal Wadhera (46), Ishan Kishan (32), and an unbeaten 35 from Tim David helped stabilize their innings. However, it was Stoinis' aggressive batting that anchored LSG's successful chase, despite the game heading towards a tense finish.
The chase began on a shaky note when LSG's debutant, Arshin Kulkarni, was dismissed for a duck by Nuwan Thushara. Despite the early setback, Stoinis and KL Rahul (28 off 22) took the attack to the MI bowlers. Rahul's brisk cameo included a hefty 20 runs off Thushara's over, and Stoinis himself launched a six off Jasprit Bumrah, signaling strong intent from the hosts.
LSG reached 52/1 at the end of the powerplay. Although MI pulled things back briefly with Hardik Pandya dismissing Rahul, Stoinis continued his assault and, along with Deepak Hooda, pushed the score closer to triple digits. After Hooda's dismissal, Stoinis reached his fifty and continued to attack, particularly targeting Mohammed Nabi.
LSG faced a hiccup as Ashton Turner and Ayush Badoni fell in quick succession, raising MI's hopes. However, Nicholas Pooran (14 not out) steered LSG home with four balls to spare, ending the match at 145/6.
Earlier, MI had a disastrous start, managing only 28 runs for the loss of four wickets in the powerplay - their second-lowest score in this phase for the season. MI's woes were compounded as key batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav departed early. Despite a 53-run stand between Wadhera and Kishan, MI struggled to build momentum, and even a late flourish from Tim David couldn't propel them to a competitive total.
Stoinis was notably effective with the ball as well, contributing crucial early overs that helped restrict MI. MI's batting faltered significantly, with Ravi Bishnoi's direct hit to run out Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya falling for a golden duck further denting their innings.
This victory lifted LSG to third in the standings, enhancing their playoff chances, while MI's defeat, their seventh in ten games, left them languishing near the bottom, complicating their path to the later stages of the tournament.
