New Zealand opened their campaign with four successive wins, but have since lost four on the trot to India, Australia, South Africa and Pakistan, while Sri Lanka, who had stopped a three-match skid with two wins, have since lost three in row to Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh.

Weather has affected both New Zealand and Sri Lanka in one match each so far with the Kiwis suffering a loss due to rain in Bengaluru, where the weather may have an affect in their next game as well as the city has witnessed rains in the past few days.

The venue in Bengaluru has produced some high-scoring games. Even the last match saw New Zealand post the highest total at the venue, but had to settle for a loss in a truncated game opening up the semifinal race for other teams.

And with rain expected again, how will the weather and pitch conditions be for NZ vs SL clash in Bengaluru? Will rain play spoilsport? Is there another high-scoring game on the cards?

With some parts of India witnessing showers due to the retreating monsoon, here is a look at the Bengaluru weather forecast and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch report for NZ vs SL 41st ICC World Cup 2023 match:

Bengaluru Weather Forecast on November 9

There is threat of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday (November 9) and in the lead up to match. It is expected to be a cloudy day with a couple of showers and thunderstorms.

The temperatures are expected to be between 21° C to 26° C during the playing hours, according to AccuWeather, which predicts showers or thunderstorms for most part of the day.

Rain prediction for Bengaluru on November 9: There is 57 percent chance of precipitation around 3 PM IST with 3.4mm rain forecast by AccuWeather, which also predicts 66 percent chance of thunderstorm around 6 PM IST. So, there may be a few stoppages.

As per Weather Channel, there is forecast for thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and there is 90 percent chance of rain with temperatures hovering around 20-27° C during the playing hours. There is forecast for storms from 12:30 PM IST to 5:30 PM IST.

Going by the forecast and the conditions over the last three days, especially the prediction for showers for most part of the previous day (November 8). There is a great chance that weather may play spoilsport in the NZ vs SL match in Bengaluru.

Even if it rains, the excellent drainage facility in the Bengaluru venue, allows play to resume quickly in case of stoppages. So, only a long-spell of shower or many spells could lead to reduction of overs and also wipe out play in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

A brief spell of shower may only see a little time lost. So, not many overs will be lost. Like Saturday (November 4), there may be a truncated match on the cards. But, how is the Bengaluru wicket going to play after seeing mixed results so far in the other matches?

M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch report for NZ vs SL World Cup match

Three pitches with one on stand by have been selected by the ICC in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Three red soil pitches will stage the 5 World Cup 2023 matches.

The red soil wickets usually tend to offer pacers some assist in the early stages with spinners coming into play as the game progresses, but some venues with red soil wickets have also been batters paradise. And M Chinnaswamy Stadium along with Wankhede Stadium in one such venue.

The first match of the 2023 World Cup was a prime example of the batting friendly venue as Australia pile on 367 against Sri Lanka, who replied with 305, but the second match saw England get bundled out for 156 before Sri Lanka made lightwork of the chase.

The most recent match saw New Zealand post 401/6, which was not enough due to the rains forcing a reduction in target and number of overs for Pakistan, who reached 200/1 in 25.3 overs to win the match by 21 runs (DLS Method).

The average first innings score in the 29 ODIs hosted by the venue is 265. In the 2023 World Cup, the average first innings score is 308 with teams chasing winning two times and team batting first winning once in a high-scoring game.

Over the years, it's been an even share of wins for teams chasing and batting first, but the chasing team has taken the edge after three matches in the ODI World Cup 2023. The captains will be tempted to chase especially with rain likely to have an effect.
