MA Chidambaram Stadium Stats and Records: Explore ODI Statistics of ICC World Cup 2023 Venue in Chennai

MA Chidambaram Stadium Stats and Records: The venue in Chennai, which is commonly known as the Chepauk Stadium, is the second oldest cricket stadium in India, having been established in 1916.

The Chepauk is one of the ten hosts during the ICC World Cup 2023. The venue first hosted a high-voltage clash between two former champions - India and Australia on October 8.

After India vs Australia, Chepauk hosted New Zealand vs Bangladesh on October 13 followed by New Zealand vs Afghanistan and Pakistan vs Afghanistan before concluding with their final match between Pakistan and South Africa. All the matches were day-night encounters.

Situated next the Indian Ocean, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, named after the former president of BCCI and Head of TNCA, will provide one of the most humid climates across all venues.

In 1952, India registered their first-ever win in Test cricket when Vijay Hazare's team defeated Donald Carr's England. The first-ever tied Test match was played between India and Australia in 1986 at the 38,200 capacity stadium that sits just two kilometres from Marina Beach.

The venue is home to Tamil Nadu cricket team as well as the Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings. The venue has hosted as many as 59 international matches so far and many IPL matches.

In total, the venue, which was formerly known as Madras Cricket Club Ground, has previously hosted seven World Cup matches - 2 in 1987, 1 in 1996 and 4 in 2011.

In 1987, Australia beat India by 1 run in the opener and the eventual champions beat Zimbabwe by 96 runs in the second match. In 1996, Australia beat New Zealand by 6 wickets.

In 2011, New Zealand beat Kenya by 10 wickets, while England beat South Africa and West Indies by 6 runs and 18 runs respectively before India beat West Indies by 80 runs in the final fixture at the venue.

In 2023, India opened their campaign with a 6-wicket win after bundling out Australia for just 199, while New Zealand registered wins over Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who also stunned Pakistan, who also lost to South Africa in a thriller in the last match.
