Madurai Panthers Accuse Ravichandran Ashwin Of Ball-Tampering In TNPL

The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 has been rocked by serious ball-tampering allegations, with the Madurai Panthers accusing Dindigul Dragons' Ravichandran Ashwin of unfair play during their June 14 clash in Salem.

In a formal complaint to the TNPL authorities, the Panthers claimed that the Dragons used "chemically-treated towels to tamper with the ball", allegedly making it heavier following a brief rain interruption. The match was eventually won comfortably by Dindigul, who chased down 151 runs in just 12.3 overs. Ashwin, though wicketless, played a key role with the bat, scoring a 29-ball 49.

Panthers' Chief Operating Officer S Mahesh raised the matter with the league in a strongly worded letter, saying: "A serious case of ball tampering occurred during our recent match against Dindigul Dragons. Despite repeated warnings, the Dindigul team blatantly tampered with the ball."

TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan confirmed that the complaint had been acknowledged, even though it came after the designated period for filing objections.

"They have filed a complaint, which we have acknowledged. Though they have to lodge any complaints within 24 hours of the game, we have still accepted it and have asked them to furnish proof of their allegations."

Kannan clarified that the TNPL permits teams to use league-issued towels to dry the ball in front of umpires, especially given the seasonal monsoon disruptions.

"This is due to rain interruptions during matches amid Tamil Nadu's monsoon season," he said.

He also backed the match officials' conduct, pointing out that the ball was examined multiple times during the game: "Umpires regularly check balls after sixes or dismissals and found no issues with it during this particular match."

If the Madurai Panthers fail to back their accusations with evidence, repercussions may follow.

"If they don't provide any evidence, then Madurai will face due sanctions," Kannan warned.

Should the claims hold weight, an independent committee will be constituted to probe the incident. The controversy has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been an exciting TNPL season, with one of India's most experienced players now unexpectedly at the centre of attention.
