Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah has opted out of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) central contract for 2025, following severe criticism over his performances in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
A BCB official confirmed on Monday to Cricbuzz that the 38-year-old cricketer requested the board not to consider him for the upcoming contract cycle, which begins in March.

The report further stated that Mahmudullah was initially included in the BCB's proposed central contract list under Grade B. However, the seasoned batter formally expressed his decision to step away, ensuring he will only receive his salary for January and February before his exclusion takes effect. His decision has further fueled speculation about his international future, especially in ODIs.
The experienced campaigner endured a torrid Champions Trophy, where his batting came under the scanner, particularly in Bangladesh's crucial group-stage clash against New Zealand. In that must-win encounter, Mahmudullah managed only four runs, while fellow veteran Mushfiqur Rahim was dismissed for just two. Their failures contributed significantly to Bangladesh's underwhelming total of 236/9, which New Zealand chased down with ease, knocking the Tigers out of the tournament.
Post Bangladesh's elimination, several former cricketers and analysts lashed out at the senior batters for failing to deliver in high-pressure matches. Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer was among those who criticized Mahmudullah's shot selection, calling his approach reckless. Jaffer noted that while Bangladesh possesses a formidable bowling attack, their batting has consistently failed to rise to the occasion in ICC events, making it difficult for the team to compete against top opposition.
Mahmudullah's decision to opt out of the central contract signals a potential end to his ODI career. Reports suggest that he has also informed the board about his reluctance to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup, further reinforcing the likelihood of an imminent retirement. His longtime teammate Mushfiqur Rahim has already announced his exit from ODIs, and Mahmudullah could soon follow suit.
Despite his struggles in recent years, Mahmudullah has been a stalwart for Bangladesh cricket, amassing 4,976 runs in 239 ODIs across an 18-year international career. While his future in T20Is remains uncertain, his withdrawal from the contract may mark the closing chapter of his illustrious ODI journey.
With Mahmudullah stepping aside and Bangladesh's batting under scrutiny, the focus now shifts to how the team rebuilds for the future, ensuring they overcome their persistent ICC tournament woes.
