Major League Cricket: Texas Super Kings Pacer Gerald Coetzee Ruled Out of MLC 2024 With Side Strain

By MyKhel Staff

Texas Super Kings on Wednesday (July 10) announced that their South African pacer Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out for the remainder of the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 due to an injury.

The 23-year-old, who was roped in for a second stint with TSK, sustained the injury in the tournament opener last week, when he finished with figures of 1 for 28 in his four overs during the team's defeat to Los Angeles Knight Riders.

The Super Kings franchise revealed the nature of injury as a "side strain" and wished the Protea quick a speedy recovery in a statement ahead of Texas Super Kings' next outing in the MLC 2024.

"He (Coetzee) sustained a low grade left side strain during Texas Super Kings' match against Los Angeles Knight Riders on July 5," TSK said in a statement. "The Super Kings wish him well as he recovers and prepares for his international commitments with South Africa."

TSK is yet to name a replacement for Coetzee, while they named veteran all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the playing 11 for the clash against Washington Freedom on Monday (July 9).

Coetzee, who broke into the national team last year, has not featured much on the international stage this year, including South Africa's run to the T20 World Cup 2024 final.

The pacer, however, played in the 2 T20Is against West Indies in May after his first IPL stint with Mumbai Indian, for whom he played in 10 matches in 2024.

The pace-bowling all-rounder has now been named in the South African Test squad for the upcoming series, which is part of the WTC 2023-25 cycle, against West Indies, scheduled to be held next month in the Caribbean.

With at least a month needed for recovery, the all-rounder will be hoping to be fit for the first Test against the Windies, which is scheduled to be played in Trinidad starting from August 7, followed by the second Test in Guyana on August 15.
