Mamata Banerjee mocks Amit Shah on his son Jay Shah’s election as ICC Chairman, calls it ‘most elevated achievement’

By Priyanka

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to X (formerly Twitter) to publicly mock BCCI secretary Jay Shah's election as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman. For the unversed, Jay Shah is India's Home Minister Amit Shah's son.

Mamata, in her tweet, stated that the ICC Chairman post is an important one than most politicians. She went on to add that Jay Shah turned out to be very powerful and described the election as the most elevated achievement.

Mamata Banerjee mocks Amit Shah after Jay Shah s appointment as ICC Chairman

"Congratulations, Union Home Minister!! Your son has not become a politician, but has become the ICC Chairman - a post much much more important than most politicians'!! Your son has indeed become very very powerful and I congratulate you on his this most elevated achievement indeed! Kudos," Mamata Banerjee posted on X.

Jay Shah, who scripted history, after becoming the youngest-ever ICC Chairman at the age of 35, will assume the office from Greg Barclay in December this year.

Jay Shah's meteoric rise in cricket administration

Jay Shah's journey in cricket administration initiated with his role as the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) Joint Secretary in 2013. Under his regime, the construction of the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium started off in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which later emerged as the world's largest cricket stadium.

Subsequently, in 2019, he was appointed as the BCCI Secretary. His inclusion in the world's richest body turned out to be a game-changing affair for Indian cricket. The IPL broadcast rights were sold for a record-breaking price of USD 6.2 Billion in 2022.

Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the growth of women's cricket with the inclusion of the Women's Premier League in 2023. The WPL turned out to be a huge success, with talented cricketers from across the nation and star overseas cricketers being part of the league.

Though Jay Shah has achieved a lot during his tenure as the BCCI Secretary, he continues to face criticism on the internet with critics pointing out accusations of nepotism and the apex body's failure to improve stadium facilities across the nation.

Jay Shah's main focus as the ICC Chairman will be to focus on Test and T20 formats. He will also aim to enhance the global popularity of the game, overseeing the game's inclusion at the LA 2028 Olympics.
