Manchester City Psychologist Rejoins England Team Ahead Of T20 World Cup 2024

David Young, known for his role in England's 2019 World Cup victory, returns as the team psychologist for the T20 World Cup 2024. His expertise from Manchester City is seen as key to enhancing England cricket team's dynamics and communication.

David Young, the Manchester City psychologist, has made a significant return to the England cricket team as they prepare for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in USA and West Indies in June.

Young, who played a pivotal role during England's 2019 World Cup victory, brings his expertise back to the squad after a successful stint with Manchester City, who won the Premier League title earlier this month.

The Premier League champions have secured their fourth consecutive title under his psychological guidance. Young's history with the England cricket team spans from 2016 to 2020, a period marked by notable achievements, including the 2019 World Cup win.

For the upcoming T20 World Cup and the T20I series against Pakistan, Young will integrate with the England team as part of the support staff. His return is not just a reunion but a strategic addition aimed at enhancing team dynamics and communication.

England white-ball coach Matthew Mott has expressed confidence in Young's impact, highlighting his critical role in refining the clarity of team communication. Mott’s strategy involves leveraging Young’s insights to ensure the team’s messages are effectively conveyed and received.

"He's previously been with the team and he's already been a great ally in messages back to me, making sure my messages are clear," Mott said.

"It's always good to have someone who's a little bit removed from the squad to make sure you're landing your messages … He's still doing other roles but we've got him for this series, and the start of the World Cup as well."

The appointment comes at a time when England is looking to revamp its approach following a less than stellar performance in the recent Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

Mott emphasized the need for a shift from a “business as usual” mindset to one that fosters openness and mutual support among team members.

"When you've had the kick in the pants like we've had, you can't just go 'business as usual'. You have to redefine how you go as a team," Mott said about England's returns in India. "As a group, we've made a commitment to be a bit more open in and around our training sessions, to help each other out a bit more.

"In India, all of us were guilty of being a bit insular, and trying to problem-solve ourselves. We've made a commitment to open up and be a bit more vulnerable as a group so that we're helping each other."

The team has committed to being more vulnerable and supportive, aiming to counteract the insularity that was evident during their campaign in India. This new direction, spearheaded by Young’s psychological expertise, is poised to invigorate the England cricket team as they gear up for the challenges ahead.

Mott's reflections on the team's recent experiences and the strategic changes underway underscore a resolve to learn and evolve. With Young’s guidance, England aims to cultivate a more cohesive and resilient team spirit. The focus on open communication and vulnerability is a testament to the team's commitment to improvement and success in upcoming tournaments.
