Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has strongly criticized Gautam Gambhir, the current India head coach, following India's disappointing 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia. Tiwary did not hold back in his remarks, calling Gambhir a "hypocrite" who "doesn't do what he says."
He questioned the coach's ability and his approach to leadership, claiming that Gambhir's coaching style lacked clarity and effective direction. Tiwary specifically targeted the relationships within the team, accusing Gambhir of creating an atmosphere of favoritism.

Speaking to News18 Bangla, Tiwary said, "Gautam Gambhir is a hypocrite. He doesn't do what he says. Where is the captain (Rohit) from? Mumbai. Where is Abhishek Nayar from? Mumbai. They got a chance to push a Mumbai player into the forefront."
Tiwary added that players like Jalaj Saxena, despite consistent performances, remain sidelined, fueling his belief that there were leadership disconnects. Furthermore, Tiwary attributed India's woes to this lack of cohesion and also expressed frustration over Gambhir's penchant for taking all the credit for KKR's success.
In stark contrast, Gambhir's former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) colleagues, Harshit Rana and Nitish Rana, have strongly defended the India head coach. Harshit, who plays for KKR, took to social media to address Tiwary's comments. He said, "Criticizing someone due to personal insecurities is not good.
Gauti bhaiya (brother) is someone who thinks more for others than himself. He always backs players when they are down and puts them in the limelight when things go our way." Harshit praised Gambhir's experience and ability to turn games around, affirming his leadership qualities.
Nitish Rana echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that "criticism should be based on facts, not personal insecurities." He went on to say, "Gauti bhaiya is one of the most selfless players I've ever met. He shoulders responsibility in times of distress like no other. Performance doesn't need any PR. The trophies speak for themselves."
Gambhir's tenure as India's head coach has been rocky, especially after India's loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and their failure to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final. Critics, including former cricketers and pundits, have questioned his methods.
Especially after India's 3-0 loss to New Zealand and the ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka. Despite these challenges, Gambhir's success as KKR's mentor, culminating in their 2024 IPL triumph, has earned him support from players like Harshit and Nitish Rana, who view him as a capable leader.
