Marco Jansen Creates South African Test History With Explosive Knock Against Australia

Marco Jansen produced a remarkable counter-attacking innings to help South Africa recover from a difficult position against Australia in the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The left-handed all-rounder's aggressive batting proved crucial as the Proteas fought back after losing wickets at regular intervals.

South Africa were struggling at 110/6 when Jansen joined captain Temba Bavuma at the crease on the third day. With Australia's bowlers firmly in control, the pair combined to revive the hosts' innings and shift the momentum of the contest.

Jansen attacked the Australian bowling lineup with an impressive display of power hitting and clean strokeplay. He brought up his half-century in just 43 deliveries, striking boundaries with remarkable consistency and putting pressure on the visitors.

The all-rounder eventually scored 85 off 100 balls, including nine sixes and three fours, before being dismissed by Scott Boland. His innings helped South Africa build a substantial partnership with Bavuma, who also delivered a vital contribution.

Marco Jansen creates South Africa History

With the knock, Marco Jansen etched his name into South African Test cricket history, setting a new benchmark for a Proteas batter at No. 8 in a home Test against the Aussies.

Batting for 100 deliveries, Jansen surpassed Peter van der Merwe's long-standing record of 76, which had stood since his performance in Johannesburg in 1966.

Jansen came agonisingly close to another milestone, falling just three runs short of the highest individual score by a South African No. 8 batter in a Test against Australia. That record continues to belong to Brian McMillan, who remained unbeaten on 87 at the Adelaide Oval in 1998.

The stand was particularly significant given the hosts' precarious position earlier in the innings. While Bavuma provided stability, Jansen's attacking approach accelerated the scoring and helped South Africa regain control.

South Africa eventually declared at 425/9, with Bavuma scoring 175 and Simon Harmer adding 82. The hosts then struck early with the ball, leaving Australia at 3/1 at stumps on the third day and firmly in the contest for a series-levelling victory.
